Sweden runs out of Garbage

Friends,
Sweden, through prudent management of waste. has run out of garbage and they are now importing the same from Norway- http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/recycling/blogs/sweden-runs-out-of-garbage-forced-to-import-from-norway
There is also a Town in China that imports waste from a neighbouring Town.
These are just but examples to show-case that waste can never be an issue the way we are making it look.
Today in the morning, officials of Pumwani Youth Groups Networks- PYGRON, paid a Courtesy Call on us at our offices. The Team was led by their Chairman Mr. Ramadhan Maingi, Secretary Mr. Steven Singano, Mr. Superior Mudaala from the St John's Community Centre and Mr. George Otieno from Angola- an affiliate member of PYGRON.
The TCKC Team comprised of Odhiambo T Oketch and Otieno Sungu.
We are looking at how to show-case Sofia Area in Pumwani as a waste free area by engaging in Practical Steps that would make this a reality.
When we first hosted a Clean-up Campaign at Sofia in July 2012, we realized that the residents were not as enthusiastic as they were this time around on the 27th Oct 2012. Many Mothers came out on their own to help clean their immediate neighbourhoods and it was encouraging.
We now want to move a step forward and introduce a Training Programme at Pumwani on the 15th Nov 2012 focusing on Waste, Waste Management and the Conversion Processes.
We will be inviting the residents to isolate all milk packaging materials and all the plastics and flimsy papers. In partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Tetra Pak Eastern Africa and EcoPost, we will reclaim these three items from the waste stream in Sofia area.
Again, we are inviting the cement manufacturers to also join with us and donate cement that will help us pave the whole area of Sofia. We will plant Trees in the area and each household will take personal responsibility to ensure success of the Programme.
Lastly, the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation had promised us waste Receptacles. We will be following this with them to ensure that Sofia Area becomes the first beneficiary of this programme.
All this needs discipline and leadership. And we are happy that PYGRON and her affiliate members are showing this.
It all means, a Clean Sofia is Possible.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya and a Clean Africa as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Networking for a Clean Kenya; TCKC meets CHF International

This afternoon, TCKC Team of Odhiambo T Oketch and Otieno Sungu paid a Courtesy Call on the Director-Kenya Tuna Uwezo Program- CHF International, Ms Selline Korir at her offices as we continue our networking for an issue based peaceful elections and a Clean Kenya. The discussions were very fruitful and we shall keep our networks posted on how we will partner on these critical issues.
Later in the afternoon, Odhiambo T Oketch had a fruitful discussion with Bishop Dr William Abuka of the Faith Community Fellowship to follow up on the Religious Leaders for a Clean Kenya Campaign.
These are Flagship Programmes for The Clean Kenya Campaign that will involve as many Kenyans with the University Students, Lecturers and the Religious Leaders in a massive programme that will bring Kenyans back to issues of leadership based on Chapter 4 and 6 of our Constitution.
We cannot forsake our Education at a time when Kenya really needs salvation. We must all rise up and be counted.
The coming General Election must be fought on issues that will drive Kenya forward as we champion for Peace, Credibility and Good Governance. We must rally Kenyans to reject money, greed, tribalism and impunity as key determinants at the ballot.
The week ending.
Ø  The week that just ended had similar engagements for TCKC. We had engagements with university students and we have since formed University Students for A Clean Kenya as a Forum on Facebook and in practice. We have so far reached 2,200 members within 5 days and we are growing. This is a Forum for all those who have Post Secondary Education across Kenya.
Ø  TCKC also hosted a strategic meeting with Akiba Uhaki Foundation at our offices to discuss further partnership as we continue our programmes especially the implementation of resolutions of The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management held at the KICC on the 28th August 2012.
Ø  In the same week, A Better World-SOF/DI continued her support to TCKC as discussed with Ms Brigitte Frey.
Ø  The Tetra Pak waste packages recycling in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and several CBOs is on course and discussions on piloting are being fine tuned at the Ministry.
Ø  We have also initiated dialogue with Universities in the USA on Comprehensive School Health Education. We are reaching out to our partner Ministries of Education, Environment and Higher Education to deliberate further on this. Professor Martin Ayim and Mr. Udoma Ohiri are our key point-men on this great initiative for Africa. They are from Cameroon and Nigeria respectively, but both are working in the USA.
Ø  The Wakulima Market Cleanup took place on 26th October 2012 as part of our market cleanup campaign in partnership with market traders and City Council of Nairobi. Muthurwa was the first to be cleaned on the 10th October 2012 in partnership with the Market Traders and TNA and a level of cleanliness is being maintained by the market traders.
Ø  On the 27th October, Pumwani Youth Groups Network-PYGRON together with TCKC, St John's Community Centre and Hon Yusuf Hassan undertook a cleanup and awareness campaign in Pumwani Majengo. We will begin piloting on waste recycling training with PYGRON next month among other groups. We are happy that Hon Yusuf pledged to work with TCKC to implement this in order to create opportunities for the youth by empowering them with skills. This is what the youth groups asked of their MP. They were very categorical that they do not want to be given handouts but “miradi”.
Week ahead.
Ø  Tomorrow, 30th October 2012 TCKC will be part of Inuka Kenya forum at YMCA deliberating on waste management.
Ø  On the 2nd November 2012, we will join with our other key partners in waste management hosted by Strategic International Applications-SAI as we continue discussions on proper waste management at Mt. Carmel Kilimani.
Ø  On 3rd November, TCKC joins A Better World-SOF/DI, one of our key sponsors to Western Kenya on a tour of projects. We will also have held discussions with Student Leaders at Masinde Muliro University and at Maseno University on Friday the 2nd Nov 2012.
Ø  In the course of this week, we will also have a meeting with our other key partner, Public Service Transformation Department at the Office of the Prime Minister to review progress made so far.
Ø  We are also in discussions with Florida A&M University and Florida State University through Professor Barack Abonyo, where we are discussing a variety of areas including research on waste management, training, exchange programs and producing literature on waste management.
Ø  We will also be hosting within the week Madam Lorna Rutto of EcoPost on how we can make greater impact on recycling of plastics into poles and structure a process of recycling to include CBOs. She was on KTN TV recently.

Listen to Prof Martin Ayim

Friends,
Please take your time and listen to Prof Martin Ayim in this Interview on AFRICA 24:  http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xtegbv_decryptage-martin-ayim-cameroun_news
Prof.  Martin Ayim   Ph.D., MPH, MCHES is an Endowed Professor of Health Education, Grambling State University, Louisiana, USA and we are happy that he is doing something to help bring change to Africa through the Comprehensive School Health Education.
With this said,I watched one Francis Atwoli on TV yesterday and I was shocked.
Mr. Atwoli is the Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions in Kenya- COTU, and a Board Member at the National Hospital Insurance Fund. He was banging tables, swinging on his chair and exchanging Hi-5 with some colleague and then issuing threats to the Minister for Medical Services Prof Anyang' Nyong'o.
Honestly, is this how serious issues are addressed? Mr. Atwoli earns Kshs 2.4m every Month and he can afford Health Care of his choice, and here he is trumping on what Prof Nyong'o and the NHIF is doing to make Health Care accessible to all in a manner that betrays the fact that he has an issue to pick with Hon Prof Nyong'o, and not the Health Care Scheme as such.
As one who sits in the NHIF Board, Mr. Atwoli should be able to articulate his ideas and issues at the Board level where his knowledge or lack of the same can be put to the iron curb of reasoning.
Instead, he chooses to call a one man press conference where he compromises his ways to get Prime Time News coverage frothing in the mouth and deriding over an idea whose time has come.
We need the Health Care Scheme Prof Nyong'o is fronting at the NHIF. We also need prudent management of the Scheme as well. But these are serious issues that Mr. Atwoli must not play with to the public gallery. If he wants to leave the NHIF Board, we at The Clean Kenya Campaign are more than ready to step in and we promise, we will not sleep during Board Meetings, and we will articulate issues that are of immense importance to the National Health Care Scheme.
Mr. Atwoli must not be used by forces of impunity to fight the Hon Minister on such an important National Issue. Kenyans need this Scheme for it is affordable. The Atwolis of this world have enough money to jump off to seek medical attention whenever he so desires at the time he needs it.
What about the people he pretends to fight for? They need this NHIF Scheme more than Atwoli needs it.
Mr. Atwoli must stop playing with our intelligence. We are not fools and he cannot manipulate our thinking. Let him seek Prof Nyong'o out and the two of them can sort their issues off the TVs.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya and a Clean Africa as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

National Youth Forum and TCKC

Friends,
The question of unemployment in Kenya has become real and emotive, and anybody who seeks political office will always place this as his agenda. Yet, for a whole 49 Years, we have seen no significant positive change. Instead, we have only faced an increased number of young Kenyans joining en mass in the unemployment job market.
This is a worrying trend. And the situation is being used by the politicians to help retain the status quo- where the youth remain jobless while the politicians reap all the gains.
The youth are being used as hatchet men in pursuit of power. They are being used as the masses that help gain the political power yet, nothing substantial is being done to address their plight.
Mr. Ben Omondi, Mr. Odhiambo T Oketch and Mr. Nahum Okwiya in a Strategic Meeting in Nairobi today the 28th Oct 2012
It is with this in mind that we welcome The National Youth Forum in their pursuit of clear undertakings with our respective Presidential Candidates about their agenda, specifically for the youth and for our environment. The National Youth Forum under Mr. Nahum Okwiya has since met with two Presidential Candidates; Hon William Ruto and Hon Peter Kenneth, to get their undertaking on the question on unemployment and the sorry state of our Environment.
We all know how dirty our Country is. And we also know how jobless many of our people are. Yet, some of these Presidential Candidates are people of means. They have been in power for as long as we can remember.
We want to know how best they have used their positions to showcase leadership that offers employment opportunities and helps to turn waste into a resource. We all know that ALL Members of Parliament have huge allocation on Constituency Development Funds- CDF. How have they used CDF to offer leadership, create employment opportunities and to help make their Constituencies Models of a Clean Country?
These are very basic issues that will let you know what one can do with advanced leadership.
But if one has not been able to showcase what the CDF Funds can do for his people, he must not waste our time with seeking bigger positions. For if you cannot manage the little that you have well, you cannot pretend that you will be able to manage National Leadership well.
We at KCDN are happy that we have been part of The Clean Kenya Campaign in seeking for a Clean Kenya. In partnership with the National Youth Forum and other Partners, we are determined that Kenyans must come together and fight for a Clean Kenya.
It is with this in mind that we are rolling out the University Students for a Clean Kenya as a Forum of people who can help bring change to Kenya.
We cannot continue doing business the same way we have been doing for the last 49 Years. If the last 49 Years did not offer us any hope, the people who have been part of leadership in those 49 Years might not be able to offer us anything new.
Kenyans must hence make a clear choice; we either live like we have lived for the lost 49 Years, or, we make a clear break from the past and vote out money, tribalism and impunity.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya and a Clean Africa as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Hon Yusuf Hassan joins The Clean Kenya Campaign

Friends,
Hon Yusuf Hassan, the Member of Parliament for Kamukunji Constituency in Nairobi today joined with us in our Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign at Pumwani Majengo in Nairobi.
The Problem/opportunity
Hon Hassan pledged his support for The Clean Kenya Campaign and said, from now on, he will be organizing and taking part in Clean-up and Awareness Campaigns in Kamukunji every month. He called upon all organized Groups and Teams in Kamukunji to join hands and work for a cleaner Kamukunji, promising that he will work with all Group Leaders to ensure that the process of Separation of Waste at Source takes root in Kamukunji and to further educate the people on the importance of waste as a raw resource for multiple usage.
He promised that next Month, he will help cordinate all the Members of Parliament from Nairobi Province to a joint Clean-up Campaign in Kamukunji Constituency in partnership with The Clean Kenya Campaign and the City Council of Nairobi.
In my address, I emphasized the fact that The Clean Kenya Campaign is not political and we are working with all Leaders irrespective of their Party affiliations. The question of Environment goes beyond politics and it therefore needs the intervention of all.
I also emphasized the fact that Clean-ups in themselves cannot make us achieve some substantial results. We must invest our time and resources to make sure that it works. I gave the example of Kigali and the Port City of Asmara as Clean Towns. But they did not just happen to be Clean. The people and their leaders put in some concerted efforts to make the Clean-ups work.
Hon Hassan following up in the Post Clean-up Forum
The Post Clean-up Forum was also addressed by Mr. Steven Singaro of Pygron and a representative of the City Council of Kenya.
The Pumwani Clean-up Campaign was organized by Pygron and St John's Community Centre in conjunction with The Clean Kenya Campaign.

Akiba Uhaki Foundation visits TCKC

Friends,
Today, the Akiba Uhaki Foundation Team made a visit to our offices in Hurlingham for some strategic engagements.
The Akiba Team included Mr. Felix Kyalo, Ms Anne Muturi and Martin. The Clean Kenya Campaign Team had Otieno Sungu and Odhiambo T Oketch.
Odhiambo T Oketch, Ms Anne Muturi of Akiba, Martin of Akiba, Felix Kyalo of Akiba and Otieno Sungu after our meeting of today at our offices
This meeting was so crucial for both of us. Remember, Akiba Uhaki Foundation has been with us in The Clean Kenya Campaign from day one, and when we hosted The 2nd Consultative Forum on Waste Management on the 28th August 2012 at the KICC, AUF was one of our Strategic Partner and Sponsor.
During that Forum, which was heavily supported by the Public Service Transformation Department at the Office of the Prime Minister and A Better World/SOF-DI, we reached on some Key Resolutions as a way forward towards instituting the process of Separation of Waste at Source in Kenya.
We are happy with the role The Clean Kenya Campaign and our Partners have played in creating massive awareness around the issue of waste and the mis-management of the same in Kenya.
We firmly believe that waste cannot waste us. We must rise and manage waste in our neighbourhoods, in our Towns and in our Country.
This is a Journey we have faithfully walked with Akiba Uhaki Foundation and other Partners, and we are happy that we are in discussions on the way forward as we approach 1st June 2013, and as we approach the next General Elections in our Motherland.
Great things are shaping up and we will keep all posted on the same.
I must sincerely thank Akiba Uhaki Foundation and all our Friends and Partners, for the confidence you have continued to have in The Clean Kenya Campaign.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya and a Clean Africa as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50 in Kenya.

Clean-ups on the 27th October across kenya

Dear Friends and Colleagues,
On Saturday the 27th October 2012, we will join with the Wakulima Market Traders in Cleaning Wakulima Market, and again, with our Partners in Majengo-Sofia Slum area in Kamukunji Constituency.

We at The Clean Kenya Campaign will be joining hands with our colleagues and Partners at Majengo for their Clean-up.
There will also be several Clean-ups across Kenya, and we are inviting all our Friends to do something in their immediate neighbourhoods.
As we approach this, we want to share a few thought processes with you. We are happy that the Concept of Clean-ups is taking root across Kenya.
We firmly believe that Clean-ups in themselves are of no value. We must invest in Massive Awareness Campaigns that make the Public know the importance of Clean-ups. This is why at Majengo, our Partners- St Johns Community and Pygron, did host a Planning and Awareness Meeting on the 22nd October 2012 to help mobilize for the main event as they created more awareness on Waste and Garbage.

If we invest in time and resources, we can never have such scenes in our midsts
Again, Clean-ups cannot succeed by themselves. We must invest our time and resources to make them work. In Rwanda, the Government has made massive investment on Omuganda and it is celebrated as a model that works. Our Councillors often travel to Rwanda- just to see how Clean Kigali is.
Kigali did not just happen to be Clean. The Port City of Asmara is not the Cleanest Town in Africa by default. A lot has been invested in the process and the result is what we are appreciating.
In Kenya, we must hence also invest in time and resources to make our Towns Clean. Anything other than this will not fly.

We are happy that we have sustained this Campaign and now, major players are stepping in. We have been advocating for Separation of waste at Source, and we are happy that in Partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Tetra-Pak Eastern Africa and others, this is being piloted in Nairobi right now.
We are also happy that we have been pushing for conversion process- where waste is used as a raw resource. This is taking root and we will be rolling a Training Programme that targets many of our Partners with a view to making them know that Waste is Wealth.
We are also rolling a Campaign with the University Students for a Clean Kenya. This Campaign is involving all University Students in Kenya and in this Partnership with A Deeper understanding of the Eco-System, we will work with the University Students to help advance the three Thematic Areas that drive The Clean Kenya Campaign namely;
  1. Environmental Management,
  2. Peace Building, and
  3. Good Governance.
Lastly, we are working closely with DHLAT Global Collaborators to introduce a Comprehensive School Health Education in the School Curriculum in Africa. We firmly believe that we will be all the better if we infuse aspects of Environmental and Health Education to our children at School level.
These are issues that will never happen by themselves. They need our constants intervention and vigilance.
Let us all work for a Clean Kenya and a Clean Africa as a Transformative Deliverable as we turn 50.
