Golf Course Ph 2; Our Cleanest Estate for February Fete

In our meeting this morning with Prof Karega Mutahi, the Permanent Secretary Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government, he challenged us to visit Golf Course Estate Phase 2 and confirm if the Estate meets our standard.
This is the first impression as you pass the main gates to Golf Course Phase 2 Estate in Nairobi
He was convinced that Golf Course Phase 2 is the Cleanest in Kenya. We took the challenge and we can now confirm; Golf Course Phase 2 is indeed very clean. We asked a few residents what their secrets were and they told us; discipline. We want to believe that all Kenyans can live to the same standards.
The residents decided that they can do it, and in so doing, made their first Journey of Hope towards a Clean Kenya by planting trees, flowers and coming together to pool resources that pay for garbage collection and security.

We at KCDN are impressed and in the spirit of a Clean Kenya Starts With Me, Golf Course Estate Ph 2 wins our Cleanest Award for the Month of February. It is important to note that Nyayo Embakasi Estate was our first Award Winners in October 2011 followed by Prudential Estate in December 2011.
In our meeting with Prof Mutahi, he was impressed with what we have so far done with The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign across Kenya and promised that the Ministry will be major players in The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign. To this extent, he accepted that he together with the PS for Environment and Mineral Resources will play Host Principals to the Programme.
Similar sentiments also came from Amb Phillip Richard Owade- Secretary- Local Authorities Administration at the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government whom we also paid a courtesy call on this morning.

Major announcements will be made on the material day by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Local Government and the Minister for Environment and Mineral Resources that will energize The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign.

Clean, Green and Litter Less; around Co-op Bank House Nairobi

We have been very busy in the Boardrooms as we are in the Trenches lately. And to this extent, it is important that we make some four very crucial announcements.
First, we have been in discussions with several Government Officials and on the 7th February 2012, we will be making some announcements that will cement this Partnerships.
Secondly, KCDN will be partnersing with the Nairobi Central Business District Association in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaigns and together, we will help drive The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign across Kenya.
Secondly, we have been in discussions with the Global Peace Festival Foundation for some while since last year and today, we met with the GPFF Country Director Mr. Fred Rangala and Mr. Vincent Rapando in our continuing efforts at building partnerships.

The discussions were mutual, informative and very timely. GPFF will play an active role in ensuring we have a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya.
Lastly, we have been looking at re-designing and re-engineering our Communication Strategy. Today, we had a lengthy meeting with Mr. Benji Ndolo, and we are pleased to announce that Mr. Ndolo is joining KCDN as our Public Relations and Communications Officer. Mr. Ndolo brings in some very sharp analytical acumen and his grasp of the Kenyan issues will help drive this Transformative Process in our Mother Land.

Kenyans making a difference; Zimmerman Clean-up Campaign

It is amazing what Kenyans can do for themselves.

We converged today morning at Zimmerman Estate- Base, for the start of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign this Year with The Base being our Focal Point.
We are impressed with reports we are receiving from many groups around the Country about what they were able to do. On behalf of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign Team, we are saying; Thank You, and a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya starts with Me.

We want to appreciate the many residents of Zimmerman led by area Assistant Chief Mr. Kaindi and the area Cllr Kinoti for leading from the front line. We must sincerely thank the Chief whose efforts at mobilization and presence made a lot of difference.
We want to sincerely thank the City Council of Nairobi and in particular, Ms Rose Kunga, The Divisional Environment Officer, who despite having a sick child at home, was still able to be present with us, leading from the front. The Council brought for us the working tools and a truck to cart away the garbage that we collected.

There were many Groups, both Youth and Women who joined us and we must appreciate their participation. We were excited when the Chief arrested a truck that had come to dump garbage in an area that we had just cleaned. I have never seen a truck driver take off in such flight. I am sure even Carl Lewis could not match this guy with that instant take off!
To the Volunteers, you all proved to Kenya and the World at large that a small team can make all the difference we need.

With this done and over with, our focus now shifts to Mombasa Town for the February Clean-up Campaign. Our Focal Point will be Mombasa in February and on 2nd and 3rd February, we will be hosting a series of meetings and an Awareness Campaign on Separation of Waste at Source in the Coastal Town of Mombasa.
We will then host The Consultative Forum with willing Groups in Mombasa led by The Mombasa Green City Initiative on the 9th February to help plan for the Clean-up Campaign which we will host on the 18th February. It is encouraging that many Groups have been reaching to us on this and we want to encourage as many organized Groups across Kenya to step forward and help us achieve a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya.

Kenyans determined to make a difference at all costs

On the 11th February, we will join with the residents of Mwatate in celebrating the Malaika Festival in memory of the Great Fadhili Williams. On that day in the morning, we will host a Satellite Clean-up Campaign at Mwatate in an event which is being organized by Mr. Duncan Mwanyumba and his Team.
The event will be presided over by the Provincial Administration, the Civic Authority, Local Leaders and many Groups have been mobilized to take part.

Lastly, we want to appreciate Ms Dorothy Otieno and Cllr Kinoti for giving us Kshs 3,000.00 each today to help the Volunteers with some refreshments. This was a show of commitment to The Campaign and we want to urge all those who are able to support this Campaign to step up and join us in the Trenches.
We need your support to make this Campaign a success.
A Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya at 50 is possible and achievable. It only needs some small morning passion, determination and commitment.

Building bridges for a Better Kenya

Friends,
Today was one hectic and fruitful day for us at KCDN.
First, in the company of Mr. Lameck Siage and Peter Mbol, we met Mr. Henry Ndede- the Coorinator, Unep-Kenya Country Programme at his offices at the UN Complex to discuss about how we can work together in The Litter Bin Programme and The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign.
We will be following this conversations forward and in our resilient determination, we are sure of achieving a Clean Kenya as we celebrate our 50 Years of our Independence next Year.
Secondly, I attended the Steering Committee Meeting at the UN Habitat to help plan for the upcoming African Conference on Volunteer Action for Peace and Development. This conference is coming at an opportune time since we at KCDN have been the foremost drivers of a process that has been very successful yet purely voluntary- The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
The Steering Team of The African Conference on Volunteer Action for Peace and Development - Dr Manu Chandaria and Dr Markandey Rai are in the middle.
We have been pushing Friends of KCDN to the wall to help make our Programmes a reality, and now, we are happy that the Organizing Team for this Conference have made recognition of our potential and invited us to join in the Steering Committee.
We promise to be of real help and support and we will avail our expertise on various fields to the good of this Committee and to the eventual successful hosting of this Conference in June.
We want to sincerely thank Dr Manu Chandaria, Dr Markandey Rai, Mr. David Caprare, Mr. Vincent Rapando, Mr. Daniel Juma, Mr. Insu Choi, Ms Karena Cronin, Mr. George Oloo, Mr. Fred Rangala and all the colleagues in the Steering Committee for this great initiative.
The time is now and we can move Africa to the next level. Let us join hands and work for a Clean and Litter Less Kenya at 50 by joining in the Clean-up Campaigns across Kenya every 3rd Saturday of the Month between 7.00am and 9.00am.

Discipline and Order is all we need

Kenya will be celebrating her 50th Independence anniversary next year and this is going to be an important milestone for this country.
Turning 50 is never an easy affair. And when we turn 50, we have all reasons to celebrate.And we want to celebrate 50 years in a Clean Kenya, and it must be our responsibility all of us; the people of Kenya, the Government, the Civil Society, the Donor Community and all.
History tells us that we have missed several important milestones since 1963 simply because we lack in discipline and we do not obey law and order.
As we approach 50 years, we want to invite Kenyans to soul search and retrace the path that we missed immediately after Independence. We set out to eradicate poverty, ignorance and disease in Our Journey of Hope at Independence. But 49 years down the line, poverty has blown out of proposition. Ignorance is still rampant and disease- our own Ministers for Health, have proved to us that we are not yet there. They have both sought for specialized treatment from the US. And on behalf of all Kenyans, I want to wish them well and quick recovery.
The sad thing is, the common man has been condemned to die even from simple diseases like Malaria. And our Hospitals are at best death traps for the citizens who cannot afford the exorbitant cost of medication.
Now, as we approach 50 years, we want to invite Kenyans to help make Kenya Clean. We must start from the physical environment- making our immediate neighbourhoods clean at all times. Let us invite all Kenyans to mind how we litter and how we handle our garbage. If all of us cared just a little, had some little discipline on how we treat our waste, Kenya would be very Clean overnight.
We hence want to invite Kenyans to join us in The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign. This campaign is purely voluntary but it will have ripple effects on many things. First, it will be a source of massive employment opportunity to many Kenyans.
We will be inviting Kenyans to separate waste at source, at the family unit, factory level and place such waste in 4 distinct Litter Bins;

Isolate all paper separately
Isolate all Bio-degradables separately
Isolate all plastics separately, and then
Isolate metal and all waste that cannot be re-used separately.

When you do this, many of our people who are involved in waste management will find it easy to buy from you what they want. We are in discussions with the various Councils across Kenya to ear-mark holding grounds in each Estate where waste can be sorted just for a short time before onward transportation to the end users.
Kenyans will be involved in this process right from the house unit, transportation and eventual conversion. Many jobs will be created and it only needs some little discipline and order. And you will be paid for your waste, not you paying someone to go dump your waste by the River.
If the enforcement agencies had just some little discipline and cared to obey law and order, Kenya would be very clean. Just look at enforcement agencies such as Nema, and see how rudderless they are. Nema jumps into every issue without any conviction. For them, it is a job to be done; no commitment, no idea, no passion, endless theatrics and rudderless. They have jumped into several things without any results to an extent that their relevance needs to be questioned. Of what value is Nema to Kenyans and to the fight for a Clean Kenya.
We only wish we had the kind of money Nema has. Kenyans would see instant results.
Nema has attempted to enforce some law on noise pollution. That is now worse. A walk around Nairobi will make you instantly notice this. Travelling in Public Service Vehicles is another problem. We have Matatus that play loud music and it is like there are no laws and no enforcement agencies in this land; a question of just some little discipline and order.
Nema has attempted to enforce waste management in Kenya and they have failed miserably. They jumped into arrseting Town Clerks around Kenya on account of dirty cities. This was a very sad affair because, someone just woke up at Nema some day and thought that this was the best way to address the situation. This was very sad, because, I want to believe that Nema should have the capacity to know what challenges the various Town Cleraks are facing in waste management.
Nema should have known that waste management is a process that needs adequate resources, man power, political good will and lots of awareness campaign across Kenya. But for them, the simple option was the best; arrest the Town Clerk and play to the public gallery. Note; we at KCDN do not support lethargic Town Clerks. We will always work with and support Town Clerks in an a bid to make Kenya Clean.Again, it is just a question of some little discipline and obeying law and order.
Look at the Police Force, especially the Traffic Police Force. This is another rudderless force as we approach 50 years of Independence. Matatus have run amok across Kenya and the Traffic Police seems not to know what to do. The sad reality here is, the Traffic Police do not know the Traffic Rules and hence, they do not know what to enforce or how to enforce what they are supposed to enforce. Or simply, they are refusing to enforce the law.
How can Matatus form such bad habits across Kenya and go away with it. This is another question of just some little discipline and order. We know that some police officers have matatus on the roads and it is their matatus that are a nightmare to all motorists. The sad reality here is, even the Police Commissioner knows this and he also seems to be helpless. He does not know how to handle his officers whose matatus are a nightmare to many Kenyans. If only the Police Commissioner would enforce just some little discipline on his officers and ask them to obey the law as they enforce law and order, Kenyan roads would be clean.
Lastly, look at our political space. I want to believe that this is the worst of them all. Politicians are operating in Kenya as if they are God's gift to the rest of Kenyans. They disregard the rule of law just as much as they disregard the Political Parties Act. And their mouths are on charger; they know it all. You cannot beat them on everything.
The political class are simply the major reason why Kenya is where we are at now. They have no ideas on how to run a country. They have looted our country dry. Yet, they will still come to us and talk like the Messiah whom we were waiting for 2000 years ago.
Kenyans must rise to the occasion and make an about turn.
Kenya will be 50 years next year and we must make a clear brake with the past. The path we took at Independence has led us to more debts, more deaths on our roads, dirty cities, rudderless agencies, bloated work force, tribalism, nepotism, clanism, corruption, inefficiency, a poor education system and much more.
Let us unite and enjoin in The Litter Less Kenya at 50 Campaign. Just do your bit whenever you are and the rest will fall in place.

The Zimmerman Consultative Forum

We hosted The Zimmerman Consultative Forum today at Zimmerman at 10am in an even that was attended by 97 leaders from the area led by Cllr Kinoti, area Councilor, Mr. Romano Mikigu- area Chief, Mr. Samson Kaindi- area Assistant Chief, Ms Rose Kunga- Area Divisional Environment Officer, members of the District Peace Committee and many more.

The Forum was a build up activity for our first Clean up activity this year under the auspices of A Litter Less Kenya at 50 which we will host at Zimmerman on the 21st January 2012 from 7.00am.
The Consultative Forums are a precursor to The Clean-up Campaigns and during these meetings, we mobilize and sensitize the invited leaders on 3 Thematic Areas namely;

Environmental Management- where we invited the leaders present to be our agents on the ground in helping to sensitize Kenyans that a Clean Kenya Starts with Me. We invited the people to take personal charge of how we dispose of our waste. The sentiments were also echoed by Cllr Kinoti and Chief Mikigu. Cllr Kinoti indicated that soon, we will be seeing Kenyans fighting over waste- ati- mbona ume iba taka yangu. This was in confirmation to the concept of waste is wealth, where we want to see Waste Handlers paying for our waste which we have sorted out at home.
Peace Building- where we invited Kenyans to maintain peace amongst ourselves at all times. We agreed that we can vote differently and still be One Family Under God as Kenyans. We invited Kenyans not to fight each other because of politics, resources or clannish issues. God in His magnanimity gave us Kenya and we must be proud being Kenyans.
Good Governance- We noted that next year, Kenya will be celebrating her 50th Birth day and asked ourselves to soul search and see if we have anything that makes us proud of this milestone. We have voted faithfully every 5 years and what are the achievements that we can bank. We hence decided that we will look at leaders from the prism of Chapter 6 of our Constitution and vote for only those who merit our expectations on Integrity and Ethical Values. Time has come when we must isolate leadership from the chaff. We must identify leaders from all those who will present themselves and vote for them regardless of how wealthy they are or they political loyalty. Political Parties are vehicles through which power is won, but the trodden path had proved to us that voting 3 piece has entrenched democratic dictatorship and this has ended giving us Journeymen for leaders.

They then become our Goodwill Ambassodors on the same across Kenya.

We must thank all those who made the meeting of today a success. We must thank Ms Irene Wasike, Dr Abraham Korir Sibg'oei, Mr. Lameck Siage- all of KCDN, Mr. Ben Nyamweya, Mr. Hezbon Omondi and Cllr Kinoti for their financial support during the mobilization period and even for the hosting of the Forum today.
We must thank the Provincial Administration, the City Council of Nairobi, the many Civic Society Organizations and the local leaders for turning out in large numbers to be with us today.

President Museveni gives the Clean-up Order in Kampala

It is amazing how the Clean-up wave is spreading across East Africa.
President Yoweri Museveni has ordered for the prompt arrest of all those found littering in Kampala or depositing garbage in a careless manner. He has ordered all security agencies to be on the look out and act appropriately.
We at KCDN must commend President Museveni for this action. Kampala will now join the growing list of Clean-Towns in East Africa where Kigali and Mwanza have been setting the trends. In Kenya, we are inviting the people to make a clear resolve and come 2013 as Kenya celebrates her 50 Years of Independence, let all our Towns across Kenya be Litter and Garbage Free.
We will engage in a campaign dubbed; A Litter Less Kenya at 50. Please join us in this drive.
We can do it and a Clean Kenya is very possible.

Residents join in the Clean-up Campaign during the official launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign by the PC Nairobi Mr. Ndirangu Njoroge at Hurumu Estate on the 22nd Oct 2011

On the 21st January 2012, we will be hosting the 1st Clean-up Campaign for 2012 across the whole country and we are inviting all those who believe that a Clean Kenya is possible to turn out and clean their immediate neighbourhoods.
It does not matter where you are on that day. Please make sure that you make your immediate surroundings clean. Let us also resolve that we will work towards ridding the Country of wanton Litter and Garbage that is blackening our image as a Country.
On Thursday the 12th Jan 2012, in the company of area Councilor Mr. Kinoti, area Assistant Chief Mr. Kahindi, City Council of Nairobi Officers and Friends of KCDN, we will be hosting a Consultative Forum in Zimmerman Estate at Mirema Hall, next to the Co-op Bank at 10am to sensitize and mobilize the residents of Zimmerman towards the Clean-up Campaign scheduled for the 21st Jan in the area.
All Youth Groups, Women Groups and Community Based Organizations working in Zimmerman are invited.

Litterless Kenya Campaign

Next year, Kenya will be celebrating 50 Years of Independence and what do we have to show case for our 50 Years?
We have lost time and wasted resources. We have fought each other and killed some Kenyans in the process. We have looted our own economy and we are playing with the education of our Children.
50 Years down the line, we are still experimenting with various Education Systems, yet, this is something so crucial for the development of the Kenyan Child. I bet, it is time to remove these rudderless Professors and bring back people like Samuel Ayodo and Taita Towett who steered the Education system so well, yet, they were no Professors.At KCDN, we have resolved to do something that Kenya can be proud of; to work for a Litterless Kenya by 2013. To achieve this feat, we have managed to assemble very creative Partnership.
It is important to invite Kenyans from across the Country to join in and do their part. A Clean Kenya truly starts with me. My resolve never to litter and throw garbage anyhow. My resolve not to engage in acts that compromise the Constitution. My resolve not to elect rudderless and vision less leaders.
This will be very critical this Year. We must rise up as a Country and confront the many ills that we have failed to achieve in the last 50 Years. It beats logic when one says that they want to phase out paper communication from Government offices and then puts a time tag of 5 Years.
5 Years is 60 Months.
The order should have been simple; from today, the Government will start corresponding on online. Period. We then use the 60 Months period to back up past correspondences and paperwork that need being mainstreamed online.
As we start this Journey of Hope to being 50 Years old, let us resolve to fight tribalism, corruption and inept leadership from amongst us.
Let us resolve to love our neighbours despite their tribal, religious, or political persuasion.
Let us resolve to vote in men and women who love Kenya; who have a vision for Kenya.
And let all those who have failed Kenya in the past commit suicide and be done with. It will be too shameful to have you around as we celebrate the Kenyan success at 50.

With the support of the Public Service Transformation Department, the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development, Kepsa, Akiba Uhaki Foundation and other willing Partners, we are launching our campaigns for a clean Kenya tomorrow when we will be hosting a team of women leaders at Lunga Lunga in Industrial Area for an awareness campaign on separation of waste at source.

We will also be hosting a Consultative Meeting on the 10th Jan 2012 with our Strategic Partners and we have requested the PSTD to host us at their Boardroom at 10am. During this meeting, apart from reviewing our Work Plan, we will set up a Team that will help drive The 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.

We are all agreed that a Clean Kenya is possible and we definitely have no reason not to achieve this.

Our Campaigns starts tomorrow at Lunga Lunga Estate in Nairobi where we will be discussing with women leaders about separation of waste at source as we gear up for our 1st Clean-up Event on Saturday the 7th Jan.

We have a tough campaign this Year, and just like you did support us last Year, we are once more banking on your support. This Year will be very different though because, many organizations are going to come on board as our partners in The Litter Bins Programme.

This is going to be an expensive but exciting campaign. We want to invite your support and participation. We are very pleased with the various Local Authorities that we have engaged with so far. We have seen commitment, interest and the drive they have to help make this campaign a success. We have also noted their various limitations and, it is in our interest as a country to lean on each other and make this campaign a success.

We do not want to fault find and apportion blames. We want to work as a team looking forward into the future in this Journey of Hope across Kenya.

Dr Kaudia Launches The Litter Bins Programme in Kenya

The Environment Secretary at the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources Dr. Alice A Kaudia today officially Launched The Litter Bin Programme at Harambee Ward in Prudential/Buru Buru Estate.

This is our proverbial journey of a thousand miles that starts with the first steps.
In her address to the volunteers, she stressed on the need of voluntary service noting that the question of garbage and litter cannot be left to the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources and the Local Authorities alone. Giving the toll free number for the Ministry- 0800 636 200, she invited Kenyans to plant exotic and indigenous and inter pass the same with Fruit Trees as they engage with the Ministry on matters Environmental at any time. This will be of great educational value to our children as they grow up because they will be able to associate which trees with which fruits.

She was full of praise of Prudential Estate and commended the residents for setting standards of cleanliness which other Kenyans should and must emulate.
In launching The Litter Bin Programme, Dr Kaudia appreciated the efforts KCDN have put in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign and conveyed the Ministry's satisfaction with the efforts that have been put in place so far. She said the Ministry will join hands and ensure that together with other willing partners, we are able to place 3,500 Litter Bins across Nairobi, 2,000 in Mombasa, 2,000 in Eldoret, 2,000 in Kisumu, 2,000 in Nyeri, 2,000 in Kakamega and 1,000 in Rongo as a pilot scheme on Litter management in Kenya in the coming year.
She proposed gasification as a means to generating electricity as a form of waste management. This process can make us generate our own electricity from the waste we generate.

It has not been an easy affair mobilizing Kenyans to the trenches. But because of the support you guys have given us in the ending year, we want to believe that we have done some good work with that support.
At KCDN, we have deliberately refused to follow the tired path of the Civil Society where organizations respond to any Call for Proposal.

We realized that Kenyans can solve our own problems and as such, we chose to deal with Kenyans in driving The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, where we drive thre Thematic Areas namely;

Environmental Management- where we mobilize Kenyans into action,
Peace Building- where we discuss with Kenyans issues that unite us as One People Under God and
Good Governance- where we discuss with the people what ails Kenya.

Kenyans have not disappointed and to this extent, as we launch The Litter Bins Programme, we will work closely with our Partners and Friends of KCDN to make this drive a huge success, and come this time next year, we will be talking different stories; a Clean Kenya shall have been Born.
Lastly, we want to initiate a Massive Awareness Campaign targeting Separation of Waste at Source in the coming year. We will be working with The Government and willing Partners led by Kepsa in this drive and we want to let Kenyans know that waste is wealth. It is hence in our own interest that we should separate waste at source and sell our waste to the Recyclers in an organized manner. The era of dumping waste is gone. We must start managing our waste.
We hence end by inviting all those who have an idea on turning waste into wealth to get in touch with us. We are on a mission and a Clean Kenya is our destination. Indeed, a Clean Kenya is Possible and it Starts With Me.

Writing History of Failures; the new generation

Dear Friends,
History is a very sweet subject, because it records happenings on a daily basis and at some point in time, a future generation can look to the past and decide on what they must do with their time. History might want to brand them as failures or, transformers.
In driving The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we have had occasion to also record history as it unfolds in our own time. Someone will one day visit our website- www.kcdnkenya.org and our blogspot- http://kcdnkomarockswatch.blogspot.com and confirm what we were able to do with our time during our sojourn in the present world.
The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign is a clear Transformation Process that is Branding Kenya to the Vision 2030. We are happy that in seeking partnership, we have found men and women in Kenya, people who are faithful to their calling. They are determined to make Kenya different.
In this lot we have His Excellency the President Mzee Mwai Kibaki, the Right Honourable Prime Minister Raila Odinga and their current Team. During their watch, we have seen great Transformation in the Public Service, in the Judiciary, in the Legislature, and we have witnessed the birth of a new Constitution. We are seeing great Transformation in the Road Sector and many things are looking up. We must applaud them for their positive leadership.
However, we must also encourage them to address issues of the economy that are failing to add up. They must look at some pedestrians who are keen on subverting the implementation of the new Constitution and they must cushion Kenyans against the run away inflation that is currently breaking families and tearing into the matrimonial harmony.
We also have the Public Service Transformation Department that has made tremendous efforts at streamlining Service Delivery within the Public Sector. We must applaud these men and women who are committed to Transforming Kenya by ensuring that we get it right this time around. We are proud that the PSTD is a Key Partner with KCDN in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
The Ministry of Environment and Mineral resources is another area where we have men and women who are committed to writing a just history for Kenya. We have all seen what they have done with the Nairobi River. No one ever believed that such a feat could be achieved in our own life times- but there it is, achieved by our own brothers and sisters in the Ministry. We are happy that the Ministry is our Key Partner in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
The Nairobi Metropolitan Development Ministry has made tremendous efforts at refurbishing machinery within the Metropolis by purchasing new fire fighting machinery, ambulances, working tools and they have since September 2009 been mobilizing for a Monthly Clean-up Exercise. We are happy to have men and women in this Ministry who are recording some positive history for Kenya and we are happy that they are our Key Partners in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government has played a key role in shaping the history of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. With their support, we have been able to partner with the Municipal Council of Mombasa, the Municipal Council of Eldoret, the Municipal Council of Kisii, the Municipal Council of Kisumu, the Municipal Council of Kakamega and the Municipal Council of Nyeri in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaigns. We are optimistic that all these Councils are burning the candle and driving The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign forward. They have written some just history of progress.
The City Council of Nairobi has many challenges that it must surmount. And we must appreciate the little they have done in keeping the CBD very clean. A walk across the CBD will vindicate this claim and as a people, we need to join them as they struggle to write history that will inspire the future generation. They are our Key Partners in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign having mobilized themselves for the Monthly Clean-up every 3rd Saturday of the Month.
The Ministry of State for Internal Security and Provincial Administration have played a very crucial part in our mobilization process across Kenya. And in this Ministry, we have public servants who believe that a Clean and Safe Kenya is possible, and we appreciate your partnership.
Now, as we appreciate all this makers of history, we also have a different breed of Makers of History, those who do nothing, yet, they have all the needed wherewithal. The first culprits in this category of failures are our Road Maintenance Crews. A drive across some roads in Nairobi and in Kenya will make you think that you are in the Garden of Gethsemane. Pray on Earth, why must we let our roads dilapidate to levels where they become death traps for Kenyans, and yet, we have Provincial Road Engineers, District Road Engineers and even Divisional Road Engineers.
These are people who must be placed on Personal Performance Contracts to ascertain what they do on a daily basis. The new Kenya must be harsh with them and we must demand equal service commensurate with the salaries we are giving them. They must not sleep on the job.
The next category of people who are failing Kenyans are Architects and those in the Building Profession. Why on Earth must we build narrow sky crappers for our people against all the laid down building codes? We have houses that rise to the 8th Floor and yet, they are not fitted with Lifts as the law requires. Their staircases are so narrow that a person staying on the 8th Floor must rope his stools by the side opening simply because the staircase cannot allow stools to go through. As Kenya is moving forward, our Architects and those in the Building Profession are writing for us that history of failures which we can do without.
You will all agree with me that we have no Drain Maintenance Experts in Kenya. All the ones we have currently are fake, for even simple down pour in Nairobi, is a sure disaster. Those who are building our roads are very surprising; they build drainage systems that head nowhere when it rains. They are writing for us some very wrong history; that no drainage system works. And they believe in that. They are a breed we can do without.
Fire Fighting Experts; the little said about this team the better. I have never seen any fire that they have put out. All the fires that I have seen have burnt everything to the ground as this team struggles with machinery that run out of water the moment they arrive on site. They are giving us some wrong history and it is a blemish we can do without.
School Curriculum Developers; I just do not know what became of our education system. These breed of Kenyans realized that they can play on the intelligence of Kenyans by changing the set books every term, just to ensure that the sub standard books written by their friends are enlisted as education material in Kenya. The results are there for all to see; we are producing robots whose spoken and written English leaves a lot to be desired. We are producing a generation that does not know that trousers are belted at the waist, not in the lower buttocks. This breed of Kenya is writing for us some wrong history.
There are many more examples of Kenyans writing History of Failures and as a people, we can all rally together and stand united in Transforming Kenya. The good thing is, we have laid the foundation for a successful Kenya by voting for a new Constitution. Let us stand up and demand for Service Delivery from all our key institution. Let us stand up and join hands in doing what must be done.
We have lost 48 years of our Independence to ineptitude and impunity and in the new Kenya, we have opportunities for atoning for our past failures as a Nation and starting afresh. It is only by starting afresh will we Transform Kenya, Brand Kenya and realize Vision 2030.

Love Eastlands; An NPC Initiative

Friends,
In our continuing efforts at sensitizing and mobilizing Kenyans to join in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we had a meeting with Pst Felix Wandera of the Nairobi Pentecostal Church in Buru Buru Estate and it was really exciting.
The NPC Buru Buru have decided to join in the Clean-up Campaign and their focus is the Eastlands through an initiative they are calling Love Eastlands. Like KCDN, they also do believe that a Clean Kenya is possible and that it is our responsibility to make that happen. To this extent, they will be joining in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign every Month as they spread the Good Word. They will be sponsoring a few Litter Bins to be placed strategically around Buru Buru Estate.

Clean and Neat

Earlier, we had met with Mr. Ben Mwaniki- Chairman Prudential Estate Welfare Association, Mr. John C Odhiambo- Chairman Buru Buru Residents Welfare Association and Ms Virginia Gichere- a Committee Member PEWA to discuss the logistics and planning for the 10th December 2011 launch of the Litter Bins Programme.
Lastly, we met with Mr. Paul M Kanyi- the Director Unity College of Professional Studies. Besides mobilizing his students to join in the Clean-up on the 10th Dec, the College will be Branding some Bins as well. It is worth noting that Unity College has been in the front line in beautifying many Round Abouts in Nairobi and maintaining the Gardens very clean and neat. They will continue in this tradition and their support and partnership in the Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign and the Litter Bins Programme will be really invaluable.
Through Mr. Mwaniki, Mr. Odhiambo, Ms Gichere, Pst Wandera, Mr. Kanyi and many more Friends of Kenya, we want to extend special invitations to all groups who may want to join us on the D-day in Prudential and Buru Buru Estates. Today being the 3rd Saturday of the Month, we joined with the City Council of Nairobi to help clean the garbage that has been dumped along Nyanza Road, just as you approach Bahati Estate.
The problem

We held our Consultative Forum with the leadership of Prudential Estate today morning.
The meeting was attended by the following people;

We first took a walk around the Estate and witnessed for our selves what the residents of Prudential have done. They did construct their roads on Cabro at a cost of Kshs 1.5m which the Residents contributed for.

They have each planted beautiful gardens in front of their houses and employed a small team of workers to clean and collect all garbage that might litter their Estate. Besides, they have contracted a garbage collector who picks their household garbage on a weekly basis.
It is important to note that Prudential is a small Estate of only 84 Housing Units and the good thing is, they have come together and decided to keep their Estate Clean.

Last Month we did visit NSSF Nyayo Embakasi Estate as a Best Practice. Nyayo is the single largest and cleanest Estate in Africa and now, we are feting Prudential as the next Best Practice which we will appreciate in December when we will be unveiling the Litter Bin Placement Programme in partnership with the City Council of Nairobi, the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, the Kepsa and our Friends from the Corporates.
Time for Consultations
If Nyayo, the biggest and the cleanest and Prudential, the smallest and the cleanest can get it right, it means that we can all get it right.
Our drive will hence to invite as many Neighbourhood Associations as possible to come forward and create a Partnership with us that will help drive this Campaign forward.

Mr. Steve Nyabwa- Tusker Project Fame- joins in the Clean-up Campaign

We are so elated that Mr. Steve Nyabwa- he of the Tusker Project Fame will be joining The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign as the Goodwill Ambassador for the Campaign from this Month.
This discussions started in May 2011 when we met in Eldoret and through the process, we have covered lots of ground. Steve has done a captivating song on having a Clean Neighbourhood and be on the watch out for it.

The Clean-up Campaign is taking shape and we want to invite you to do something about your neighbourhood. Last Month we feted NSSF Nyayo Embakasi Estate as our Best Practice for October and this Month, we are visiting Prudential Estate as our next Best Practice for the Month of December.
NSSF Nyayo Embakasi Estate is the single largest Residential Estate in Africa that has maintained clean standards worth talking about. Prudential Estate is the smallest Estate that has also maintained Clean Standards that we will be appreciating.

In so doing, we will be unveiling The Litter Bin Placement Programme between KCDN, the various Councils, Corporates and the people of Kenya on the 10th December 2011 at a ceremony that we will host at Prudential Estate in Buru Buru.

The National Environment Convention

The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, working in Partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, City Council of Nairobi and other stakeholders will be hosting a one day National Environment Convention at the KICC on the 19th January 2012.
The Theme for this Convention will be; A Clean and safe Kenya is Possible.
We are inviting all Kenyans, Corporates, NGOs, CBOs, FBOs, Youth, Women and all those who are keen on seeing a Clean and Safe Kenya to join us on this day.
We want to invite all the Corporates who are in waste recycling business to step forward and show case what they can do with waste.
In the interim, we are inviting Kenyans to take charge and organize themselves and maintain a clean neighbourhood. If NSSF Nyayo Embakasi Estate and Prudential Estate Residents can do it, we can all do it.
We will also start placing Litter Bins across our Estates in December 2011 in Partnership with the various Councils and Stakeholders and we want to invite the active support of Kenyans. It is in our interest to have and maintain a Clean and safe Neighbourhood.
It is a good example to the Children and it invites Friends.
Lastly, during the 2nd Circle of The Clean-up Campaign, we will be focusing on separation of waste from source as an economic activity for the Family Unit and the Neighbourhood Association. We are in discussions that may lead to Partnerships that will advance this course.

The Provincial Commissioner Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu today officially launched the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign at Huruma Sports Grounds by calling for greater coordination in efforts that are aimed at Environmental Management.

In a function that was attended by 137 groups from Huruma and around, the Starehe DC Mr. Benjamin Gachichio, Mathare DO Mr. Gerald Omoke, an Administrative Officer from the PC's office Ms Rhoda Otieno, Director of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi Mr. Isaac Muraya, area Councilor Mr. George Wanjohi, Chairman Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association Mr. George Ochola and Assistant Directors at CCN, many Ward Managers and senior Officers from the Council, the PC did appreciate the efforts that have been put in place to help mobilize Kenyans to join in the Monthly Clean-up Campaigns.
Noting that our Constitution has now put lots of emphasis on a clean and safe neighbourhoood, he invited the residents of Nairobi to join hands and help in managing the garbage and waste that we generate. He noted that we generate 2,000 tonnes of waste daily against the 800 tonnes that the City Council can manage. This means that we are generating 1,200 more tonnes of waste that end up clogging our roads and drainage systems.
This calls for some radical shifts in our attitude.
Because of this, he indicated that he will be calling a Consultative Forum for all players in the Environmental Management Sector to plan how our efforts can be well coordinated and facilitated with an aim of supporting the Youth and Women Groups which have formed themselves to help in this area.

The PC invited Kenyans to live in harmony and unity devoid of tribalism, noting that the war against criminals must not be construed to mean that the Government is targeting some Religion. He said criminality knows no Religion and all Kenyans must join hands and help in flushing out all the criminal elements amongst us.
The PC then presented 100 Certificates of Appreciation to the first 100 of the 137 Groups that took part in today's event.
Earlier the area DC Mr, Gachichio had called on the residents to maintain peace even as they approach the next election.
The Director of Environment Mr. Muraya noted that we helped to pick and collect litter that was transported in 22 tracks of lorries. He said the operation to help Clean Huruma had started very early when the Council trucks and Tippers rolled along Juja Road to remove the mounds of garbage that had remained unattended to for long. He praised the partnership that the Council had entered into with the residents of Nairobi and invited the residents to join the Council every 3rd Saturday of the Month in the voluntary Clean-up Exercises.
The Area Councilor Mr.Wanjohi said he will lobby his colleagues to take the Clean-up Exercises more seriously. He was impressed with the attendance and promised to join in all the subsequent Clean-ups every Month.

In all, we had a good launch. We want to thank all the groups that attended the official Launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign at the Huruma Estate today. We want to thank the Provincial Commissioner Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu for making time to come and join us in this exercise amidst his very tight schedules. We want to thank the area DC Mr. Gachichio, area DO Mr. Omoke, DO from the PC's office Ms Otieno and all the Provincial Administration Officers who helped make todays event the success that it was.
We want to thank the City Council of Nairobi, the Director of Environment and his team, the area Councilor, all the Ward Managers and the Council employees who attended and the One Stop Youth Resource Centre for your active support and participation.
We want to thank the Public Service Transformation Department for having supported all our 3 Consultative Forums in Komarock, Nyayo Embakasi and Huruma Estates. We also want to thank them for supporting the placement of a Supplement about the Clean-up Launch on the 13th October 2011 in the Daily Nation and for providing us with 200 Tshirts that used today.
We also want to thank the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources for giving us their support towards the launch. We will provide their list shortly.

We also want to thank the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya for providing us with the seedlings that we planted today at the Huruma Sports Grounds. Lastly, we want to thank Mr. Dan Juma of Global Peace Youth Corps who sent us Kshs 3,000.00 to help top up the PA and Sound System payments.
Thank you very much.
And as the Coordinators of this event, we had a few observations which we want toshare with the public;

There will be need for greater financial support and commitment from our Partners to help address logistical issues such as mobilization, communications, transport, PA and Sound, provision of Tents, Chairs and some refreshments, video and still photography coverage and entertainment.
There will also be greater need to bring together all actors in the environmental sector during such events to help have some clear focus, and
There will be even more greater need to start partnering with the media houses during such campaigns.

We will hence be knocking on your doors, not just for material support, but to also help us address the fore mentioned. This is the only way we will keep having the goodwill of Kenyans in this Campaign.
Otherwise, on behalf of The Consultative Team Members, I want to thank all those who made this day the huge success it was. Let us keep the fire burning and take stock of what will be facing us every Month in this Journey of Hope across Kenya.

Reflections on Mashujaa Day

20th October is a day we reflect on the struggles of our Fathers, struggles that made us attain our Independence in 1963. 48 years down the line, things seems to have gone full circle and we are badly off than when we set on this Journey of Hope.
We set off with a few clear objectives;

To fight against illiteracy
To fight against disease
To avail clean drinking water to all
To avail electric power to all
To unite Kenyans as One Family Under God

We had other rafts of objectives that we set out to achieve and the good thing is, we set some time lines for which these different objectives were to be achieved. It is against this background that we should be celebrating our Heroes today.
a] Illiteracy

Now, the fight against illiteracy seems to have evaded us. In a recent study, one group reported how pupils in class 8 were ill prepared to sit for their exams. The sad part of the report was that pupils in class three were unable to read and write properly.
This is a national shame, because even at the highest institutions of learning, we have students who are struggling to effectively engage in any intellectual discourse.
The management of our school curriculum is far from convincing. Parents are not certain about how and what their children are being taught in school. Pupils in the various classes are not being given the same instructions as we have no set school syllabus and set books.
Our children are going through a system of education akin to robots. It saddens most parents to see their children at class one being subjected to instructions that cover well over 7 subjects while at that level, a child only needs to read and write.
Let us reflect on these disparities in our education system with a view to having some deliberate upward mobility that will create confidence in the parents and the children alike.
b] Disease
Eradicating disease is an uphill task and this was going to be difficult from the word go. But we have some manageable tropical diseases that the Ministry of Medical Services and that of Public Health and Sanitation have made great strides in controlling. But as we celebrate our heroes today, we must reflect on the cost of medication. The cost of medication is far way above the reach of many Kenyans.
This is why Kenyans were somewhat elated when the then Minister for Health Hon Charity Ngilu and her team came up with a Health Care Scheme that was going to be of real benefit to many Kenyans. This is a scheme that the Government must implement for the good of all. The National Hospital Insurance Scheme must roll out far and wide and this must be a very deliberate effort.
As we reflect on our Heroes, we must put in more efforts to ensure that Kenyans can access affordable Health Care.
c] Water
Water is life and this is very obvious, yet, 48 years down the line, even in Nairobi, residents are struggling and queuing to fetch this precious commodity. We had the slogan of water for all by the year 2000 and the year 2000 came and passed. 10 years down the line, we are still at the zero peg.
We are seeing some efforts at availing water for all being put in place currently but as it were, we are getting clouded in cobwebs of corruption allegations that tend to derail the positive efforts being put in place.
As we celebrate Mashujaa Day today, we must reflect on why we do not have running taps in our homes in Nairobi.
d] Electric Power
It goes without say that if Nairobi is not sufficiently electrified, then, the rest of the country is missing out on Electric Power. Currently the cost of Electric Power is driving investors out of Kenya and it looks like this does not bother anybody at the Ministry of Energy.
Again, the cost of Gas is increasingly becoming beyond the reach of many Kenyans and again, we are playing roulette and dancing to the tunes.
e] Unity
We all know how superficial our unity as Kenyans has always been. One minute we are all One Family Under God and the next minute, we are cutting each other with matchettes. Yet, we keep saddling ourselves with a leadership that tends to preach tribalism and nepotism as it pays lip or no service to the unity of Kenyans.
As we celebrate this day, let us reflect on our roles as Kenyans in creating an everlasting unity that will transcend any political interests.
Having looked at all these, we must appreciate that at long last something is being done to move Kenya out of the trench. We have been stuck for 48 years and now, we can see good attempts at taking Kenya to the next level.
Our roads are being expanded and new ones being built. But we seem to be facing the same old challenges where new roads tear off immediately upon being commissioned. This is a worrying trend and as we celebrate our Heroes today, we must ask our Road Engineers to live to their professional calling and build for us roads that have a life span. Not roads that develop pot-holes even before being commissioned.
When you move around our Towns, you will notice how poor our drainage systems are. THis calls for soul searching; are our engineers equal to the task? Or, should we also out source for man power to build our drainage system the way we have out sourced Chinese to build our roads?
The way our Markets are being developed leaves a lot to be desired. A quick walk at Muthurwa Market will inform you of how not to do it. Muthurwa has been invaded by hawkers from all sides. The Bus Termini has been invaded by hawkers and the powers that be seems to be very helpless. The Road that leads into and out of Muthurwa must not have been done by a Roads Engineers. This was a quack who got paid handsomely for doing nothing. Yet, we have the Police Force, the CID, the KACC, the Auditor and Controller General, the Efficiency Monitoring Unit, The City Council of Nairobi, the Provincial Administration, the Parent Ministries, the Office of the Prime Minister and ultimately, the Office of the President.
I want to ask a very simple fact; there is nobody in all these offices who has been able to see that Kenyans were cheated out of the more than Kshs 800m that was used to develop this nothing called Muthurwa Market? This is food for thought as we celebrate Mashujaa Day.
Kenyans are currently faced with myriad of problems in the Housing Construction, Garbage Collection, Water Provision, Electric Power Provision, Provision of Affordable Medical Health Care etc. Yet, we all know that these are issues that we can easily surmount as a Country if we put just some little efforts.
Just juxtapose these failures with our success with enterprises such as;

Anglo Leasing
Goldenberg
Triton
Maize

We did accomplish such enterprises with speed to an extent that up till now, Kenyans cannot put pieces of the rigmarole together to point at exactly who did what. We lost big and that is a clear fact.
We must hence join hands as Citizens of Kenya as we start Our Journey of Hope into our 49th year of Independence and demand for more action from the people whom we have put into elective office to govern the affairs of our Country on our behalf. This calls for supporting their actions if it is for the good of our Country, and chastising them if their act in a manner that does not add value to our wish as a Country.

One thing I am very sure about, no one will do it for us. The UN Agencies, the Donor Agencies, and all our Development Partners are more keen on workshops, seminars and those kind of Theatrics that add no known value to our aspiration as a Country.
We must appreciate that we now have a team in Government that is keen at Transforming Kenya and we need to hold hands and walk as a team, as One Family Under God.

The Huruma Consultative Forum

We hosted the Huruma Consultative Forum at the DO's Office in Huruma yesterday as from 10am.

The Forum was chaired by the DO Huruma Mr. Gerald Omoke and was attended by the Assistant Director Environment at the City Council of Nairobi Mr. Gabriel Omondi who was accompanied by the Ward Manager and the Ward Environment Officer.
The DO was accompanied by the area Chief Mr. Luta, his Assistants, Headmen and a Team of CBOs, Women and Youth Groups.
This was the most interactive Forum we have ever held and we had very active participation from the people.

KCDN partnering with NEAM Nairobi

Dear Friends,
We had a very successful meeting with the PS Office of the Vice President and Ministry of Home Affairs Dr Ludeki Chweya today morning at his offices to discuss The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. His Excellency the Vice President Hon Steven Kalonzo Musyoka is keen on joining in The Campaign and we will send them our Programme of events to enable him join at the time most suitable to his schedules. Ms Angela Kagunyi joined me for this meeting. Angela is the Chair, Kenya Model United Nations- CUEA Chapter.

Thereafter, we had a meeting with Ms Martina Muoki at the Ministry of Education. She has been nominated by the PS Education Prof James Ole Kiyiapi to sit in The Consultative Team that plans these campaigns. We will be focusing on a sensitization programme with schools across Kenya.
We then had a meeting with the Provincial Director of Environment Nairobi province Mr. Titus Simuyu at his Nyayo House offices. Mr. Simiyu was joined by Ms Anne Theuri- the Senior Environment, Education and Public Participation Officer.

NEMA Nairobi will be sending an officer to our last Consultative Forum in the run-up to the official launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign tomorrow. The Forum will be at the CDF Office in Huruma as from 10am and will be chaired by the area DO Mr. Gerald Omoke assisted by Ms Rhoda Otieno representing the PC Nairobi.
Lastly, I had a meeting with Mr. Limo at the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development. This was a follow-up meeting and we will meet with other Ministry officials tomorrow at 7.30am.
In the meantime, we are making great strides towards the offical launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign and we will be keeping you posted as we invite your participation.

We started it all on the 18th September 2010 at Eastleigh and we have gone full circle and are coming back back to Nairobi on the 22nd October when we will officially launch the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.

We had a very successful Consultative Forum yesterday at The NSSF Nyayo Embakasi Estate where our Chief Guest was Mr. Alex Kazongo, the Managing Trustee at the National Social Security Fund- NSSF.

The Forum was also attend by Ms Rhoda Otieno- representing the PC Nairobi, Mr. Ireri Nyumero- representing the DC Embakasi- Mr. James Wagala- representing the Head of Public Service Transformation Department, Mr. Joseph Kirago from Kirago & Mwangi, Mr. George Ochola- Chairman Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association and many residents.
The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign is taking root amongst Kenyans and as we launch the 2nd Circle of The Campaign on the 22nd October at Huruma Estate, we want to invite more players.
We are indeed indebted to the Public Service Transformation Department whose support to us is anchored on their 4th pillar in the Transforming Kenya Initiative- Public Private Dialogue- for all the support they have continued to give us.

We want to appreciate the KTN team for giving us coverage yesterday in their 9.00pm Prime Time News. However, in as much as what the Managing Trustee of NSSF did tell the press post the event, the journalist failed to get the gist of why we were at Embakasi.
We all know that NSSF is the single largest investor in the housing industry in Kenya currently with an investment portfolio of well above Kshs 100 billion spanning residential housing to business premises. We also appreciate that the NSSF is helping achieve the need for adequate shelter in line with the aspirations of Vision 2030.
But that was not why we were at Nyayo. The journalist should have gotten the background information and realized that the Consultative Forum had all to do with Best Practice from the NSSF and Nyayo Embakasi Residents.
That is what we were appreciating. And the journalist would have made some efforts to appreciate this. This is basically why we have avoided working with the media houses in the Clean-up Campaign since they fail to report accurately what we are doing by choosing to report on other issues they deem fair and favourable to them.
However, we want to appreciate the KTN and Nation Media journalist who covered the Consultative Forum. Whether you reported on what we are doing or not, we appreciate that you made efforts to join us in the campaign.

Our Clean-up programme

Dear Friends,
We will be launching the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign on the 22nd October 2011 at Huruma Estate in Nairobi in a campaign being led by the PC Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu, the Town Clerk Nairobi Mr. Phillip Kisia and the Consultative Team comprising the Provincial Administration, the City Council of Nairobi, the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, the Kenya National Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Global Peace Youth Corps, Special Needs Empowerment Programme, Living Light Foundation and others.
We want to appreciate The Public Service Transformation Department who have stepped in strongly to support our efforts in the run up to the Official Launch of the 2nd Circle. We also want to appreciate the National Social Security Fund who will be hosting us tomorrow at Nyayo Embakasi Estate for a Best Practice visit that will be led by the PC Nairobi, the Town Clerk Nairobi and the Head of Public Service Transformation Department.
We must also appreciate the support we are receiving from The Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources. We are also happy that the PS Ministry of Education has nominated a Senior Officer to join The Consultative Team. They have effective become members of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. We also want to appreciate Kepsa, Brand Kenya Board and other partners who have shown a willingness to working with us in this journey of Hope.
In the run up to Huruma, we have held one Consultative Forum at Komarock on the 6th October. We will be hosting the Nyayo Embakasi Consultative Forum tomorrow the 13th October.
Then on Friday the 14th October, we will be meeting the DO Huruma and his team for a planning session. This will be followed by the Huruma Consultative Forum on the 18th October where we will meet with about 200 area leaders.
The Big Day will be on the 22nd October, and all are invited to join us in Huruma as we launch the 2nd Circle of this Campaign.
Immediately thereafter and in partnership with The Foundation For Kenya Pastoralist Women and other partners, we will be hosting the Isiolo Consultative Forum on the 2nd November in Isiolo Town. This will be followed by the official launch of the Isiolo Clean-up Campaign on the 12th November 2011.
On the 4th November, in partnership with the Municipal Council of Mombasa and other partners, we will host The Mombasa Consultative Forum at the Municipal Hall where we will discuss how to go about the re-launch of The Mombasa Clean-up Campaign on the 19th November 2011. This efforts are being coordinated by the Town Clerk Mr. Tubman Otieno who has nominated Ms Elipida Mwakamba- the Deputy Town Clerk and the Director of Environment Mr. Bilafiff to oversee the planning process.
In December our Focal Point will be Kisumu Town and another town. We will give you details as we approach the dates.
However, in all the above cases, we are inviting all those who are keen on joining us to reach out to their respective officers designated to help in the planning process. You may also write to us directly and join in the planning processes.

Towards the official launch of the 2nd Cirlce of the Campaign

In the run up to the official launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign on the 22nd October 2011, we have lined up a series of activities.
First, we have held the Komarock Estate Consultative Forum which we hosted on the 6th October 2011 at The Hoggs Den in Komarock Phase 2. The following day, the 7th October 2011, I met Mzee Samuel Muchiri and Mzee Stephen Kamau- all from Huruma Estate to start planning for the Huruma Event.
Yesterday the 9th October 2011, in the company of Mr. Ochieng' Khairala and Ms Eileen Chelagat, we met the officials of Nyayo Embakasi Residents Association led by their Chairman Mr. George Ochola to help plan for The Nyayo Embakasi Consultative Forum which we will host on the 13th October 2011. In attendance we had Ms Lusy Wanjiru, Mr. Magut Richard, Ms Martha Owuor and Mr. Ikahu TM all from NERA. Besides discussing about The Best Practice visit by the Hon PC Nairobi, the Town Clerk CCN and the Head of Public Service Transformation Department- [and their delegations], we developed a programme for the day which we have herein enclosed.

Today the 10th October 2011, we are meeting with Mr. Joseph Lunani- the Managing Director of Maskil Company Limited. They have offered to re-do our website to capture the import of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. And on behalf of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign Team, I must say a big Thank You to Mr. Lunani and his Team.
Tomorrow the 11th October 2011, we will be meeting with the Management of the National Social Security Fund at 4.00pm to discuss further how to work together in this Campaign and more specifically, the Best Practice visit by the PC, Town Clerk, Head PSTD and the Consultative Team.
On the 13th October 2011, we will be at Nyayo Embakasi Estate for the Nyayo Embakasi Consultative Forum. Again, this will be an open Forum where we will advance 3 Thematic Issues openly, namely;

Environmental Management- Pitch by Mr. Isaac Muraya- the Director of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi
Peace Building- Pitch by Mr. Ochieng' Khairala from the Living Life Foundation
Good Governance- Pitch by Ms Florence Kanyua and Odhiambo T Oketch- both from KCDN

On the 14th October 2011, we will be meeting the DO Huruma and his area Chiefs, Assistant Chiefs and Headmen for a planning session at the DOs office in Huruma at 10am.
On the 18th October 2011, we will host The Huruma Estate Consultative Forum in Huruma where we will engage 250 opinion leaders in our last major build-up effort to the official launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
I must appreciate all The Consultative Team members who have put in efforts to make sure that the launch of the 2nd Circle of this Campaign becomes a success on the 22nd October 2011. We must also appreciate the Public Service Transformation Department Office of the Prime Minister for their support with the Consultative Forums as we approach the official launch.
We also want to appreciate the Provincial Administration, City Council of Nairobi, Brand Kenya Board, Kenya Private Sector Alliance, the Wildlife Clubs of Kenya, Special Needs Empowerment Programme, Global Peace Youth Corps, The Royal Media Services, the Living Light Foundation and the staff of KCDN who have worked had to make sure everything moves on well.

Meeting the Radio Africa Group

Friends,

I had a meeting with a team from Radio Africa Ltd this morning at their offices at Lions Place.

Radio Africa was represented by Mr. Kapere, Ms Kamau Margaret and Mr. Phillip Waru and we explored the possibilities of Radio Africa Ltd working with us in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.

Radio Africa Ltd comes in with loaded advantages; They have The Star Newspaper, Kiss 100 FM, Classic 105, East FM, Radio Jambo, Xfm, Relox, Classic TV and Kiss TV. I bet this will give The Campaign all the needed visibility.

They will be sending to us what it takes for this Partnership to take root at concessional rates and I will share the same with all of us. We will be looking at creating greater visibility for all our partners and the arrangement is such that we will be availed airtime and space both on Electronic and Print media.

We are looking forward to continuing this discussions to the next level.

Nema is missing the point

Uncollected garbage is choking our major Towns with Nairobi and Mombasa bearing the heaviest brunt. And recently, Nema took Mr. Tubman Otieno- the Town Clerk in Mombasa to Court on account of uncollected garbage.
They have also taken Mr. Phillip Kisia to Court on the same charges.
If you travel along Juja Road, Jogoo Road, Donholm Area and many other places in Nairobi, you would think twice about how we handle our garbage. Mombasa has been in the news very much in the recent times and I want to believe it is time we addressed this issue more clearly.
In the last one year, we have really focused on the garbage in our Towns. We have pointed this out, mobilized willing Kenyans to step in and help and we have received very positive and passionate support from the various Town Clerks and their Councils. We do not expect the Town Clerks to walk out all the times to phyisically join in cleaning out towns.
We have seen Mr. Kisia and Mr. Otieno in the trenches actually cleaning. We have been joined by several other Town Clerks in the trenches and their desire is that they preside over clean Towns.
In the course of doing this, we have also realized that our Councils cannot do it by themselves. The City Council of Nairobi has 600 employees in the Environment Department and 5 trucks to cart away the 2,000 tonnes of waste the 4 million residents generate. The Council has no shovel, no loaders and no compactors, yet, we expect the Council to deliver.
The Municipal Council of Mombasa has 400 employees in their Environment Department and they have 5 trucks while the 1,5 million residents generate 1,000 tonnes of waste per day.They have 3 shovels, 2 loaders, 2 compactors and this is definitely not adequate to serve the residents. Yet, Mombasa is the gateway to Kenya besides being our major Tourists destination.
The Country has no known Solid Waste Management Policy to address this mess and what we call dump sites are theatres for massive corruption powered by people who work and serve in Government. These are people who thrive in this mess that they create. They have never been happy whenever this problem gets attention.
Do we all remember how Councilors and Government employees fought for cuts when Jacorozzi wanted to step in to manage waste in Mombasa? Do you remember how this same cartel fights at the mere mention of Dandoara Dump Site being relocated?
Yet, Nema, is proving incapable of seeing and identifying these underlying issues without which our Towns will never be clean.
We must not have dump sites. We need to have Waste Recycling Plants across the 47 Counties in Kenya. And this must be the focus of Nema. They must fight to enable the commissioning of such plants. Nema must fight to brake the cartels that control the waste industry, the people who thrive on our dirt.
Besides creating massive employments for our people, these Waste Recycling Plants will help address the rampant polythene menage. Nema made a knee jack attempt at banning production of polythene production and as soon as they made that pronouncement, they rescinded the same. What happened? Were they compromised into silence?
We cannot address the issue of garbage menace when we have no fire in the belly, or, when you make pronouncements that elicit favours from the cartels. You prompted get compromised into silence and they you pour your incompetence on someone who has no where-withal to accomplish the work for which you are blaming him.
I want to believe that Nema should also in the same breath be vigorous in pursuing residents who dump their garbage by the road side. Which law allows residents to dump by the road side their household waste? These people should be arrested and charged accordingly.
If we are to have a clean country, we must give our various Town Clerks the tools of trade, empower them and wait for results. If they fail to deliver, we should sack them and surcharge them accordingly.
We are launching the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign on the 22nd October 2011 at Huruma Estate in Nairobi, and we are extending an invitation to Nema to climb down and join us in this campaign. This is our country and it pays not to claim the moral high ground on empty template.
We took note that in as much as Nema claims the moral high ground on environmental matters, their absence in the Clean-up Campaign has been soundly telling. We are hence appealing to Nema to stop the blame game. Let us join hands and sort this mess.

We had a meeting with the Foundation For Kenya Pastoralist Women officers today in the afternoon and our focus was how to Launch The Monthly Nationwide Clean Up Campaign in Isiolo on the 12th of November 2011.
FKPW is led by Ms Tiyah Galgalo Ali who is a Founder Member, and they are focusing on 5 Thematic Areas namely;

Women Empowerment
Peace Building and Conflict Transformation
Girl Child Education
Governance and Women Leadership and
Research and Development

In the meeting we were with Ms Leyla Adan, Ms Ralia Bidu and Ms Esterina Kageni.

FKPW works within 11 Counties of;

In Nairobi, they have a presence in Korogocho and Mukuru Kwa Njenja.
FKPW will become our Lead Partner in these Counties in The Monthly Nationwide Clean Up Campaign. They will use the Consultative Forums and the Clean-ups to advance issues of Peace Building amongst the Pastoralist Communities.
We all know that there are many conflicts that are related to sharing of the available resources such as pasture and water. We will bring the communities to clean their immediate neighouhoods as One People Under God. We will then advance Thematic Areas that seek unity for the people of Kenya as we educate ourselves on the 4 Pillars of Transforming Kenya.

The Cleanest Estate in Africa; Nyayo Embakasi Estate

Friends,
When I called Mr. Ephantus Njeru to inform him that the PC Nairobi and The Consultative Team will be visiting Nyayo Embakasi Estate on the 13th October 2011 as a Best Practice for Kenyans, he told me; 'Welcome to the Cleanest Estate in East and Central Africa.' Mr. Njeru is the Estate Supervisor and he works with his colleagues Peter and Ann.
I laughed and dismissed him as a typical bragging Kenyan.

Today, after briefing the DC Embakasi Mr. Peter Mbugi, I went to Nyayo Embakasi Estate. My, this is the Cleanest Estate in Africa, not just East and Central Africa. And I want to challenge anybody who thinks otherwise to let us know.
The Estate is managed by Kiragu $ Mwangi Limited- registered valuers and property managers. The Estate is one of the Flagships of the National Social Security Fund- NSSF and Phase one of the Estate was built in 1999, the same time Buru Buru Phase 5 was being built.

Just look at this....

The Managers had a very clear vision and focused management style from the word go. They decided that they wanted to bring Muthaiga to Embakasi and that is what they have done. They have worked as a team with the Residents and this has seen clear decisions being made on the 4 key areas namely;

Garbage Collection
Estate Cleaning
Gardening and Tree Planting and
Estate Security.

It is important to note that this is one area where even the Police confirm, there are no muggings and no theft.
The Residents in Partnership with the Management ensures that water flows, street lights are working, and services for which they are paying are provided. And the key words here is Team Work.
As at now, Nyayo Embakasi Estate has 2,505 units and a further 688 units will be commissioned within 3 Months. This makes Nyayo Embakasi Estate the 2nd largest Estate in Africa after one in Natal Province of South Africa.
At optimum level next year, the Estate will boast of 4,774 units.
If this is note a Best Practice, then I do not know what that should be. And we at The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign are truly happy to pay a visit to this Estate that is the Cleanest in Africa on the 13th October 2011.
In the same vein, we are inviting Kenyans, if Nyayo Embakasi Estate can do it, we can also do it wherever we are.

The PC to visit Komarock and Nyayo Embakasi Estate

Friends,
Today was another eventful day for us at The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
I met with Arch Phillip Sika- PS Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development at his offices and later in the afternoon, in the company of the Regional Commissioner Mr. Christopher Musumbu and Ms Rhoda Otieno- an Administrative Officer at the PC's Office, we briefed the PC Nairobi Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu about the progress we are making with preparations for the National Litter Picking Day to be hosted at Huruma Estate on the 22nd October 2011.
We have many dignitaries who have confirmed their participation on the D-day and we will give details about this later.
On the 6th October 2011, the PC and his entourage, and the Deputy Town Clerk and his entourage will tour Komarock Estate where we will host a Consultative Forum with the Residents at Phase 3a as from 10am.
On the 13th October 2011, the PC and his entourage and the Town Clerk and his entourage will tour Nyayo Embakasi Estate where we will again host a Consultative Forum with the residents.
On the 18th October 2011, The Consultative Team members will have a Consultative Forum with the people of Huruma Estate at Huruma Sports ground as from 10am. We are in touch with the various groups fgrom Huruma, and those who want to be part of this meeting can always reach out to the undersigned.
The PC and the Town Clerk will be joined by Mr. Emmanuel Lubembe, the Head of Public Service Transformation Department from the Office of the Prime Minister.
The Two Tours will be in appreciation of the Best Pracrices by Kenyans in maintaining a Clean Neighbourhood. The PC and his Entourage will listen to the people and thereafter give administrative advice and encouragements.
On the 22nd October 2011, the PC, the Town Clerk, Mr. Lubembe and other leaders will all join us at Huruma Estate to launch the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
On behalf of The Consultative Team members, we want to invite residents in these two areas to turn up in large numbers and interact with the PC and his Team.

A Blow to Environmentalists

Prof Wangari Mathai was best known for her passion about tree planting across the world. Today, we salute this Great Lady of the World for putting Kenya firmly in the Global map with this passion.
As we join in mourning Prof Wangari Mathai, we at The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign would like to challenge Kenyans to pick the pieces from where Prof has fallen, rise up and continue the struggle.

I was watching the NTV Prime Time News on Saturday and I was really impressed by the piece from Ouko Okusa about The Rock City- Mwanza.
Mwanza is a real clean city, and from the look of it, some serious efforts seems to have been put in place to ensure that the city is that clean. As we celebrate the life and times of Prof Wangari Maathai, I want to challenge us to continue planting trees as she did all her life. Let us clean our neighbourhoods as a mark of honour in her memory.
I bet she wanted for us a Clean and Green Kenya. What can we do to further this dream? Do we just mourn for this Gallant Lady of Africa and as soon as we inter her body we forget about her passion?

On the 22nd October 2011, we will be launching the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign at Huruma Estate in Nairobi through The National Litter Picking Day. We will mark this day in honour of the Life and Struggles of Professor Wangari Maathai.
We will be inviting Kenyans to each reincarnate the Wangari Passion in each one of us by joining in making Kenya Clean. We all need a Clean Kenya. Clean in our neighbourhoods, Clean with love for each other; Clean with trustworthy leadership; Clean with love for our Children, and Clean in several ways that advance democratic governance.
That is the passion with which we at The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign will immortalize Prof Wangari Maathai.
May the Good Lord give us the courage and strength that He gave to Prof Maathai to enable us live to see a Clean Kenya.
May the Good Lord rest her soul in peace.

Transforming Kenya as a Team

Team Members,
The last one year has been very exciting.
We launched The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign on the 18th September 2011 at Eastleigh and we have not looked back. During that period of time, we looked at dirt and litter and did all we could to help focus our attention as a people to that.

As we launch the 2nd Circle of The Campaign through The National Litter Picking Day on the 22nd October 2011 at Huruma Estate, we want to appreciate Friends who have supported us all along and those who have joined in the campaign. We want to focus on best practices and we will be visiting Komarock Phase 3a, Nyayo Estate in Embakasi and other well kept Estates.
We will create some positive image of the Kenya we want and we will be inviting all of us to lend a hand into creating that Kenya.
We are happy with the support we are receiving from The Provincial Commissioner Nairobi Province Mr. Ndirangu Njoroge and the Town Clerk at the City Council of Nairobi Mr. Philip Kisia. These two offices and their staff members have come very strongly to lead from the front and we must appreciate them.
The Public Service Transformation Department has become a Key Strategic Partner in this campaign and we must appreciate Mr. Emmanuel Lubembe and his Team. They are the first Team to become our Gold Partners in this campaign. Thank you so much.

As I have said, the Public Service Transformation Department has become our 1st Gold Partner in this Campaign. We are looking forward to creating such Partnerships with the Brand Kenya Board, the Kenya Private Sector Alliance and many more.
In our discussions with His Excellency the High Commissioner of Rwanda to Kenya George Kayonga yesterday, we learnt that the Rwandese experience has been a cultural thing. The People of Rwanda are a proud People and a proud People would like to be Clean.
Cleanliness hence starts from your house outwards. It spills into your immediate neighbourhood, the village and upwards. We must emulate our brothers and sisters from Rwanda and do the same.
A Clean Kenya must Start with me----from my house outwards. Let us join hands and make the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign one which will truly Transform Kenya into realizing Vision 2030.

A meeting with the Rwanda High Commissioner

In the Build-up to the official launch of the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we paid a courtesy call on The Rwanda High Commission in Nairobi where we held very fruitful discussions with the High Commissioner His Excellency George William Kayonga.

Our Team was composed of Mr. Emmanuel Lubembe- the Head of Public Service Transformation Department at the Office of the Prime Minister, Ms Soraiya Shariff from the same office, Mr. Danaiel Juma and myself.
His Excellency the High Commissioner gave us the History of Omuganda and how it was a reaction to cement the dignity of the people of Rwanda. It is a campaign not only meant to physically clean the immediate neighbourhood, but it is a forum where people discuss social issues and affect them. The campaign is in two parts, the first session where people engage in pre-arranged activities- cleaning, slashing, tree planting helping to put up a house for a neighbour and such like activities and the second part where people now sit down and discuss pertinent issues that unite them as a people.
He gave us a story of some Chines who visited Kigali and decided to test the resolve of the people by one of them dropping some polythene bag. It was amazing....the next Rwandese promptly picked it up and took it to a litter bin.
The Clean-up Campaign in Rwanda is a culture; people have grown to accept that cleanliness starts from you and your house as it comes to the neighbourhood, the village and then it assumes a National Dimension. It was imperative to note that it is the people who generate all the litter and garbage hence, if we dispose of the same responsibly, we will live in a clean and healthy neighbourhood.
In Rwanda, issues of cleanliness have seized to be Government issues. This are community issues and every person knows what his obligation to a clean neighbourhood is. He told us that we must invite Kenyans to own the process at all levels and it must be a bottoms-up approach.
In congratulating the Team that has been behind this Campaign, he said he will join us in the next campaign on the 22nd October 2011 when we will be launching the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign through The National Litter Picking Day. He will also be joined by the Rwandese Students in the Kenyan Diaspora.
Lastly, he will be organizing for our Team to join our colleagues in Rwanda during the November Omuganda Day to enable us interact and share ideas with our colleagues. Similar delegations from Rwanda will be joining us in this Campaign once in a while as it grows in stature.
Mr. Lubembe on his part thanked His Excellency the High Commissioner for meeting with us today. He appreciated the efforts that have been put in place to ensure that the Clean-up Campaign is a success. He said that his department in driving the Public Transformation Initiative in Kenya under the banner of Transforming Kenya will give all their support to the Campaign.
He lauded the people of Rwanda for setting high standards with the Clean-up Campaign as he pointed out that the Clean-up goes beyond the normal act of cleaning. He said his Department will actively participate in this exercise as one of the Pillars driving the Transforming Kenya Initiative.
He applauded the commitment that has been put in assembling a team to drive this campaign and pointed out the fact that the PC and the Town Clerk Nairobi are part of the Consultative Team, besides other key Government and Private Partnership as a sign of seriousness from both the Public and Private entities towards the Campaign.
Mr. Juma gave us the parallel of the Saemaul Undong as practiced in Korea. He was optimistic that the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign will be a huge success. Under the banner of Miss University East Africa, they will be cleaning Langata Road on the 28th November 2011 before crowing the Miss University East Africa at the Carnivore.

Friends,
On behalf of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign Team, I want to sincerely thank the CEO at Kenya Private Sector Alliance Ms Caroline Kariuki for the meeting we had with her today at her offices. I also want to sincerely thank Ms Soraiya Shariff from the Public Service Transformation Department for making time to join us in the meeting.
This was a step in the right direction since Kenya Private Sector Alliance have been partnering with Public Service Transformation Department in driving the Transforming Kenya Initiative. The Clean-up Campaign is hence coming in handy in this partnership.
We were really impressed with how quickly she absorbed the concept and her desire to make it work in a sustainable way. We are looking forward to the great benefits that will be associated with this Campaign such as;

The need to invite investors to come up with Waste Recycling Plants across the 47 Counties as an economic activity as well as a job creation opportunity- this will be defended by the people to put at bay all vested interests,
The investor support in placing Litter Bins across our Major Cities as they advertise in the same spaces as well,
Mobilization of Media, Sports, Business and Music Personalities to be in the front line in helping with the sensitization efforts for the Campaign
Sustained media and publicity for the Campaign,
and the prospects of crime reduction as a consequence of enhanced awareness in a clean environment.

Under the Public Private Dialogue, and working in close partnership with several agencies, we have that firm conviction that The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign is going to be the next big thing that will lead to Transforming Kenya into realizing the Kenya Vision 2030.
In the same vain, we want to thank the CEO at Brand Kenya Board Ms Mary Kimonye and her Team whom we met with yesterday.

KCDN meets Brand Kenya Board and Public Service Transformation Department

Friends,
We were pleased to host our first Consultative meeting with the CEO of Brand Kenya Board Ms Mary Kimonye at her offices today in the morning.
We had earlier made contacts about Brand Kenya Board joining in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign and we made good progress today.

Ms Njau, Odhiambo, Ms Kimonye, Ms Muchiri, Mr. Kivindyo and Dr Nzilu at Brand Kenya Board this morning.

Ms Kimonye assured us of her support and participation of the Board in this noble Initiative. The Board will sit in both the Media and Publicity Committee and the Financial Resources Mobilization Committee.
Ms Kimonye was accompanied by Dr Nzilu- Director Marketing, Mr. Musyoki Kivindyo- Director Communication, Ms Veronicah Muchiri and ms Edna Kuria while I was accompanied by Ms Pauline Njau from Media Machine. She Chairs the Media and Publicity Committee.
Later in the afternoon, we met with Mr. Emmanuel Lubembe- the Head Public Service Transformation Department at the Office of the Prime Minister.
Mr. Lubembe was accompanied by Ms Soraiya Shariff, Ms Sharon Makena, Ms Emily Angaine and Ms Linda Waireri all from the Public Service Transformation Department. It is important to note that PSTD through the Transforming Kenya Initiative are going to be our Key Partners in this campaign alongside many other key Government Departments, the Local Authorities and the Corporates.
We will be launching the 2nd Circle of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign on 22nd October 2011 at Huruma Estate when we will be hosting the official launch of the National Litter Picking Day with His Excellency the President and the Rt Hon Prime Minister and we have already constituted a Consultative Team to help with the planning.
This team was officially launched by the Provincial Commissioner Nairobi Mr. Ndirangu Njoroge on the 24th August 2011. We want to invite all Kenyans to own the Clean-up Campaign and help Clean Kenya.

The Waruku Declaration; The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign

In a highly attended Waruku Clean-up Campaign today, we came out with what the Director of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi Mr. Isaac Muraya decided to call the Waruku Declaration; Total war against Dumping.
The Waruku Clean-up Campaign marked exactly one year since the City Council of Nairobi started the Monthly City-wide Clean-up Campaign. The exercise was launched by the Assistant Town Clerk Mr. Dan Masetu on behalf of the Town Clerk and he called on the City residents to take personal responsibility in how we dispose of our waste and litter.

He said the Council will remain in the frontline in this campaign and they are open and ready to work with all the residents of Nairobi in keeping Nairobi clean.
The event was organized in partnership with City Council of Nairobi, Provincial Administration, Waruku Residents Association, the Westlands Association, Waruku Progressive Youth Group and KCDN.
Besides these participants, we had students and teachers from the Premier Institute, Resource Maximization and several residents.

On behalf of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we want to sincerely extend our appreciation to all these teams for responding to our call; A Clean Kenya Starts With Me.
In closing the exercise, the Director of Environment Mr Muraya, who was flanked by his colleagues from the Council- Mr. Richard Mogoko- a very good Friend of KCDN. Mr. Njogoge from Education, Mr. Mario, Mr. Omondi and Mr. Miheso and several City Council employees from the Departments of Environment, Decentralization and Inspectorate, called on the residents of Nairobi to declare Total War against dumping.

Just look at the extent we can go to to dump garbage in our Country!!

He said that the Council will do all in her power to start arresting all those who litter and dump as a deterrent measure. He thanked the residents who have walked with the Council through this journey of Hope in the last one year.
He promised to help turn the City around as we mobilize for the Launch of the 2nd Year of the Clean-up Campaign on the 22nd October 2011 at Huruma Estate in what has been called The National Litter Picking Day.
We say to all Kenyans who did engage in making Kenya clean today from across all Kenya; Thank you. We had Clean-ups in Thogoto, Landimawe, Huruma, Kariobangi, Mombasa, and many more places. You did us proud. Kindly share the photos of your events online.

This Saturday the 17th September 2011, we will be celebrating one year since we launched The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. We will be at Kangemi in partnership with the City Council of Nairobi in a Clean-up Exercise that will be presided over by His Worship the Mayor of Nairobi Cllr George Aladwa.
During this period of time, we want to thank all the Friends of KCDN who have made this campaign what it is. We want to thank the various Councils that we have partnered with namely;

KCDN Presents Cheques to needy Students

Friends,
When we hosted the Donholm Clean-up Campaign on the 6th August 2011, we did promise that we were going to pay school fee for some students.
We were given names from the District Education Officer Embakasi and today we presented cheques worth Kshs 15,000.00 to 3 such needy cases.
First, we were at Embakasi Girls Secondary School wherewe were received by Mr. Abraham Lagat and Ms Emily W Masele- the Deputy Principal.

Here, we presented Ms Joyce Kabingo- Form 1S and Ms Linet Awuor- Form2E with Kshs 5,000.00 each. Joyce has fee arrears of Kshs 38,527.00 while Linet has fee arrears of Kshs 58,690.00

Lethargic Council Services

Friends,
Working for a Clean Country has never been easy.
As we mobilize and sensitize the people to join in and do the right thing, we have some amongst us who will continue to litter and place garbage by the next corner.
One interesting case is the scenario in Donholm Estate. We did a Clean-up Campaign there on the 6th August 2011 and the attendance was very impressive. In partnership with the City Council of Nairobi, we removed all the garbage that had been placed by the road and in the Trenches.

The Council employees came in very handy and we were really impressed by their resolve to keep the City Clean.
We left the Junction leading into Donholm a very clean place. But the following morning, on a Sunday, I was shocked to find a new heap of fresh garbage, now strategically placed by the road. It has now become a permanent dumping site.
Imagine, the place next to Caltex Petrol Station, just as you leave Outer Ring Road. Immediately on the road, has become a dumping site. Yet, we have Council employees, the Provincial Administration and the People!

This means only one thing; We have people in employment who are not taking their work seriously. How can the people join you to do your work and immediately we finish, fresh garbage is placed right where we had cleaned. More so, it is now placed by the road side for all and sundry to see.
The Managers at the City Council of Nairobi must wake up and do their jobs. We cannot afford to keep talking and mobilizing about a Clean Country when the people whom we are paying to do exactly that are becoming lethargic. It is very annoying that for 3 weeks now, no one seems to have seen the new problem in Donholm.
If placing garbage any how at any time is meant to malign the good efforts you are doing, we should have seen some efforts at arresting these people who are dumping aimlessly by our roads. The problem is not unique to Donholm alone. Just drive across Nairobi and look outside. We are living so carelessly and the people whom we have employed to do this work seems to be living in their own world as well.
It is very sad that we have the Ward Managers, the Divisional Managers, the Assistant Chiefs, the Chiefs, the Nema People- whatever they are doing, the Environmental Officers all across Kenya. They should report such cases to their superiors for immediate action if they are unable to address the same.
Again, we would have wanted to have seen some arrests by now. How can someone come with all that garbage and come and dump the same by the road side and go away with it?
10 meters from where people are now dumping at Donholm, we have a Police Patrol Base. Honestly, what are these people doing? I thought their motto was Utumishi Kwa Wote, and these means remaining vigilant at all the times.

I want to believe that setting traps for these people who dump cannot and can never be rocket science. We simply seem to have inept people handling affairs of our Councils.
Cleaning our Country is a collective undertaking that should involve all of us. But as we join in to help, we expect the people whom we are paying to do their jobs and do it correctly.
As we speak, Juja Road is a mess. Jogoo Road is a mess. People are dumping aimlessly just by these roads and the Council seems helpless in addressing these simple issues. We want to see some arrests and the sooner it is done the better for the image of the City Fathers and the Council employees.

Can we create some order?

Friends,
In our dispatch on the 29th August 2011, we did raise the issue of informal settlements and how we can also create order in those places;
4. We must accept that order can also thrive in the informal settlements. Who says that we cannot plan how we live in the informal settlements?
Today, we have lost many of our colleagues in Kenya at Sinai in the fire tragedy that happened this morning. We want to start by sending our condolences to all those who lost their relatives and property. May the Almighty God rest their souls in eternal peace.
We also want to appreciate the Kenyatta National Hospital for their state of preparedness and how they responded to the disaster. We want to appreciate the many Emergency Service Units who responded quickly as well as our Police Force. You did us proud today.
Having said that, we want to once more impress upon Kenyans that we can indeed create order and live with it in peace for ever after. We do not want to point fingers and apportion blame. However, we want to urge the Town Clerks across all our urban settlements to implement the law without fear or favour.
Please know that we are looking up to you to help create order within our urban space.
You have the powers to realigne our informal settlements. The sad reality is, we have many amongst us who thrive on the disorder that kills our people. Such people must be told in no uncertain terms that order must be created and that Kenyans are willing to live by it. Kenyans must also respond by respecting the law and becoming very proactive in defense of the said laws.
We must stop grabbing land; land that sits by the Pipelines, Railway lines, Power lines and by the rives and water mass.
Let us not procrastinate. Let us open access roads withing the informal settlelments immediately. Let us not wait for another disaster to happen. today it is at Sinai, tomorrow it will be at Kondele, or, it will be at your immediate neighbourhood.
Let us relocate all those families living by the Railway lines. Let us move away from the Power Cables. Let us move away from the Pipelines. Let us respect these open spaces and stop salivating whenever we see such spaces.
Tragedies do occur the world over, but we must create access for emergency responses. It is only through such respect for open spaces will we be able to have some Rapid Response Mechanisms whenever we have such calamities visiting upon us.
Let us respect sound advice we receive from the professionals.
As we mourn our dead today, let us not waste more time discussion such issues in hotels. Let us move to the trenches and create some order. The time is now and the day is today. Let the Town Clerks across the whole country take charge within their jurisdictions and enforce the Building Codes. Let them ensure that we respect the dictates of our Town Planning.
We must create order and enforce the same. And the best placed people to do this are our Town and Council Clerks.
Kazi kweni Jameni. Our hearts grieve with our Mothers, Fathers, Sisters and Brothers who have lost their loved ones today at Sinai Nairobi. Once more, may God rest their souls in eternal peace.

Today we have posted Our Journey of Hope across Kenya Part 2.

In these series, we are trying to prove only one thing; that a Clean Kenya is possible.

We are also trying to prove another thing; that we are all One Family Under God. This is why we all join hands to help clean Mother Kenya and then we again join hands to make a visit to our Mothers and their New Born Children in Hospital.

The Monthly Nationwide Clean up Campaign heads to Naivasha where we will host a Consultative Meeting with the local leaders tomorrow as from 9.00am. We will be discussing how best to launch The Naivasha Clean-up Campaign on the 24th September 2011.

As usual, we rely on your support and goodwill to make this happen.

We are really encouraged by the Partnerships that we are creating. We want to make it absolutely clear that The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign is ours- all of us Kenyans and Friends of Kenya. It is simply a call to action.

We are proving time and again that a Clean Kenya is possible. We only need to join hands and make it work. I was really impressed on Sunday afternoon when I was watching a cycling race in Spain. The entire stretch had no pot hole on the road and there was no litter, not even a PK wrapper, a Safaricom or Airtel card, not even a BAT cigarette butt anywhere.

Why, what makes those guys keep their neighbourhoods that clean. And what madness makes us throw these things anyhow like this?

Preparations for The National Litter Picking Day is gathering momentum. The Consultative Team that was launched by Mr. Ndirangu Njoroge- the PC Nairobi on the 24th August 2011 have held 2 sessions and the Team has expanded.

We will be hosting the 3rd session on the 21st September 2011 at the PC's Boardroom and during that meeting, we will unveil our programme of action for Nairobi. We are inviting Kenyans from across the Country to start mobilizing for this day.

We want to help pick as much litter as possible across Nairobi on the 22nd October 2011. We are all invited to the Trenches for real action. And hopefully on this day, we will get some serious direction, support and encouragement from the top leadership in Kenya.

Lastly, those who would like to be of support and even be our partners in this Campaign can kindly get in touch.

We at KCDN firmly believe that we the People of Kenya can help Clean Kenya.

This is a campaign for Kenya by Kenyans. Let us make it a huge success......

Reinventing our Pride; Transforming Kenya

In driving The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we have been very deliberate. We have been appealing to the general sense of Kenyans to feel proud that we can indeed Transform Kenya from where we are currently to a different level.

This is the Kenya we must leave

It all starts by reclaiming our immediate neighbourhoods. How best can we reclaim our immediate neighbourhoods if we cannot maintain simple levels of cleanliness. We must start by cleaning our neighbourhoods of all litter and garbage. We must stop throwing litter any how. We must stop living with mounds of garbage in our midst and behave as if that is normal.
We firmly believe that we have some very basic things we must do. We want to invite your thinking to some of these basic things;

We must as a people re-create a new sense of hope and confidence in our abilities as a people.
We must accept and start appreciating that we can also live in clean, safe and secure neighbourhoods.
We must start arresting and charging all those who litter our neighbourhood.
We must accept that order can also thrive in the informal settlements. Who says that we cannot plan how we live in the informal settlements?
We must start respecting the laws of the land as we go about in Nation Building.
This means, we must respect the rights of each and every one of us.
We must build houses in conformity to the laid down requirements and standards, respecting the Building Codes as we do so.
We must respect the rights of other road users as we drive on our motor ways.
We must stop throwing out rubbish through the car windows as we travel.
We must respect each and every persons right to life, to vote, to education, to better shelter, to ....
We must join hands in shunning corruption from all quarters. It has messed Kenya for the last 48 years and we need not experiment any more.
We must stop voting for those who have known and proven corruption cases to be our leaders. Honestly, what do you expect if you vote a thief to be your leader?
We must know that we are One People Under God.
We must reclaim Kenya and keep her clean as God ordained during creation time.
We must plant enough trees and help keep Mother Kenya green.
We must avoid theories that add no known values to our aspiration as a country. If it is about planting trees, lets plant trees, leave theories out of this. God will take care of the rest.
We must accept that our strengths lie in our unity as a people.
We must look at each other as One Special God's Bits of Wood.
We must Love each other as God desired of us.
Lastly, we must love God with all our hearts, might and soul. In His providence we dwell all the times.

It is a whole loaded programme, and it starts from somewhere. We are happy that Kenyans have made these first steps to Transforming Kenya and surely, we will not fail.
We must go slow on politics and its intrigues. Some Kenyans are busy politicking all the times, engaging in acts that tend to divide more than unite us as a country. We must go slow on this and move Kenya in one decisive direction that will spur economic take off.

And this is the Kenya we must embrace, where the leaders show leadership through action.

If we go back to these simple things, I want to believe we will be in a position to catch up with our Independence Siblings, the Koreas and others whom we were at par with in 1963.
In Transforming Kenya, the Police Force must remain faithful to the rule of Law. The Judges must dispense justice in fidelity to the law. They must not auction justice to the highest bidders. And Parliamentarians must rise to the occasion. They must not be vindictive while legislating.
The Architects must respect their professions. Accountants must stop being creative with figures. Doctors must maintain allegiance to the Hippocratic Oath. Road Engineers must build roads without paying homage to Lords of Impunity and Kenyans must rise to the occasion as One People Under God with a shared destiny.
We must shun all Lords of Graft, people who believe in impunity, and leadership must be given to those who show humility and love of the human being. We must avoid all people who thrive on politics of deceit and chest thumping, people who would rather Kenyans killed each other for them to ascend to the top leadership.
It is time we Branded Kenya as a destination of choice for the whole world. It is with all these in mind that we are once again inviting all Kenyans whenever you are, to join us in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
Lastly, our media must focus on issues that unite us as a country and they must desist from the kind of theatrics they are engaged with. The media is dividing Kenyans and it is time someone stopped them.
The ball is firmly in our court as Kenyans, and we can easily choose to Transform Kenya to be the Kenya we want.

The meeting started with a word of Prayer led by Dr AK Akidiva at 9.15am followed by quick introductions

Dr Akidiva welcomed all of the Consultative Team members to Integrity Centre on behalf of the Director and CEO Prof PLO Lumumba. He made it known to us that Prof Lumumba would have liked to be with us but was held in a meeting with some visiting Diplomats. He did appreciate that the PC Nairobi could make time to come and be in attendance in person and passed well wishes from the KACC Family.

Nairobi PC Mr. Njoroge Ndirangu officially launching the Nairobi Litter Picking Day Consultative Team at Integrity Centre 24th August 2011 with Ms Linah Wodera of Wildlife Clubs of Kenya

Odhiambo T Oketch took the Consultative Team Members through The Monthly Nationwide Clean Up Campaign and invited joint efforts in tackling the litter and garbage menace in Nairobi and Kenya as a whole. He pointed out that the Clean-up Campaign was started in Nairobi in September last year and time has come for the Campaign to start creating some impact with Kenyans.

He said that the Campaign has since been started in Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega and Nyeri.

Lastly, he invited the Consultative Team to form 4 Working Committees as follows, and immediately, the following persons volunteered;

This team will reach out to all known groups in Nairobi- churches, schools, CSOs, FBOs, Government Departments, Neighbourhood Associations, Youth and Women Groups etc.

This team will seek Media Partnerships and will ensure that the Campaign is visible. They will also arrange for talk shows both on Print and Electronic Media. They will work on a media strategy that will make this Campaign a Must Do for the residents of Nairobi

This team will reach out to willing Partners for Financial and Material Support. They will work closely with the PC Nairobi, the TC City Council of Nairobi and the Director and CEO of KACC.

It was agreed that all these Teams can co-opt any other Members as they deem fair and appropriate.

It was then the time for the PC Nairobi to officially launch the Consultative Team. Mr.Ndirangu, who is also the Chair to the Provincial Environment Committee, started by saying that this is an idea whose time has come and that is why he had to attend the Consultative meeting in person.

He recalled the Nairobi of yester years when provisions of services were at their best. He remembered how efficient road transport was and how the Council used to collect garbage promptly. Those were the days when even dead animals used to be picked from our streets with ease, drainages used to be cleaned and they were sprayed for mosquitos and vermins.

He noted that with the high explosion in population and the rural urban migration, Nairobi has grown big and provision of services is stretched. This then calls for joint efforts in addressing the litter and garbage menace, saying that the Nairobi Litter Picking Day is such one great effort that he will give all his attention and support.

He also noted that the right to a clean and safe environment has now become a right in our Constitution and as such, we must all play our parts by becoming responsible in how we dispose of our litter and garbage. He said he will enlist the support and active participation of the Provincial Administration machinery, the District Environmental Committees and the Youth and Women groups.

Lastly, he called for coordination and harmonization of the Clean-up Activities in Nairobi to ensure that they all take place on one day. He was happy that both the City Council of Nairobi and the Nairobi Metropolitan Ministry have a designated day in the Month when they conduct such activities. It was a general feeling that the 3^rd Saturday of every Month should be the ideal date for all such clean-up activities.

With those remarks, Mr. Ndirangu had the Consultative Team officially launched.

The next meeting will be on the 1^st September 2011 at 9.00am at City Hall where the Working groups will present their various reports for adoption and execution.

We were all invited to health break as the meeting came to an end at 10.15am.
