Massive Kondele Clean-up Campaign

We had a massive turn out from the People of Kisumu and more specifically the People of Kondele, Obunga, Nyalenda, Kaloleni and Manyatta for todays Kondele Clean-up Campaign.

The event was led by the area Councilor Mr. Tom Ogola, the Group Leaders from many organizations in Kisumu, the City Council of Kisumu and was organized under the auspices of The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaigns. In short, we had attendance from the following Teams;

What impressed us was the resolve from all these Groups; they are taking over and from now, they will manage the Monthly Clean-up Campaigns in Kisumu by themselves.
On behalf of KCDN and The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, we want to sincerely appreciate all these Team Members who joined up with us to make the event a success. We want to specifically thank the Teams from Sweden and the United Kingdoms who joined us for the Clean-up. We want to thank our students and their lecturers from Maseno University and Kisumu Polytechnic for joining with us in such large numbers.

Our next event is The World Clean Up Day in my neighbourhood in Nairobi. If all these other places can get it this well, we in Nairobi are going to prove that indeed, the Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign has been internalized and accepted by many people in Nairobi.
The World Clean Up Day is going to break all records both in terms of attendance and impact. Watch this space. Ama watu wa Nairobi? Let us show the whole world that we mean business and Nairobi will ever remain the Green City in the Sun.

Moving from Paper to Practice; The Kondele Clean up Campaign

Friends,
We had a meeting with the Centre for Research on New and Renewable Energy at Maseno University Kisumu Campus this morning at 9.00am to discuss the need for moving from Paper to Practice as a Nation in as far as waste management and conversion is concerned.
The meeting was chaired by Prof Frederick Onyango- the Director of the Centre and he was accompanied by;

I was accompanied by;

We looked at the prospects of waste management and conversion to water for irrigation, manure and gas. We will make a follow up on this and create a strong partnership on the same.
Later at 11.00am, we joined a bigger team of Kisumu Environmental Campaigners and were really impressed with the turn out for the Kondele Clean-up Campaign tomorrow.This groups are forming themselves into a standing committee that will drive The Monthly Nationwide Clean up Campaign in Kisumu every Month.

The Umoja Consultative Forum

In partnership with the Public Service Transformation Department, Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government, City Council of Nairobi and the Provincial Administration, we hosted a Consultative Forum today in the Morning at the Council offices at Umoja Estate in Nairobi.

This was a preparatory meeting for the World Clean-up Day which we will host at Umoja Estate on the 24th March 2012 as from 7.00am.
We are pleased to announce that our Guest of Honour will be the Hon Prof Karega Mutahi- the Permanent Secretary Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government. He will be joined by The Lord Mayor from Kampala Capital City Authority who will lead a high powered delegation of 4 Lord Councilors from Kampala.
This occasion will be graced by several other dignitaries and many Kenyans from all walks of life have written to us indicating their participation. This will also include a Team from the Lets Clean the World Campaign from Europe.
We are inviting as many Kenyans as possible to join hands with us on this day to help mark this day in style. At the same time, we want to keep inviting your Financial Support, Partnership and Participation with us in this Journey of Hope across Kenya.

The Waste Revolution in Kenya

Dear Friends,
This Saturday, the 17th March 2012, willing Kenyans will be joining hands across the Country in The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign. Our Focal Point for this Months Clean-up Campaign will be Kondele Estate in Kisumu. But we will have some presence in some selected Towns as well on the same day.
It is important to note that at KCDN, we have been in the fore front in mobilizing and sensitizing Kenyans for the need to keep our neighbourhoods clean. We started this Campaign way back in 2009 in Komarock, then launched the City Wide Clean-up Campaign in Nairobi in 2010.
In 2011, we launched similar Campaigns in Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisii, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nyeri and Naivasha. In sensitizing Kenyans on the need to keep a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya, we have worked closely with the following Institutions;

1. The Provincial Administration- Office of the President
2. Public Service Transformation Department- Office of the Prime Minister
3. Greening Kenya Initiative- Office of the Prime Minister
4. Local Authorities- Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government
5. Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources
6. Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development
7. Akiba Uhaki Foundation
8. A Better World
9. Kenya Private Sector Alliance
   
10. and a host of Partners- both Institutional and Individuals- all listed under Partners in our Website.

We are happy that within this short time, we have reached many parts of Kenya and knocked on Government Doors where we have interacted with willing Public Officers whose support has enabled us move the Campaign forward.
Waste and Litter Management in our Country has been bedeviled by poor management and in most cases vested interests. This has made all previous attempts at coming with tangible solutions to be difficult. We are determined to break the case of vested interests in waste management in Kenya. And we are achieving this by creating a water tight team of partners in the fight for a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya.
And we can only achieve this by involving the people, the various interest groups and having some solid backing from the Government and the Local Authorities. We must put our foot down on this with very clear determination.
We took a study on the Waste Management situation in Kenya and came up with a solution; that the People of Kenya must be in the front line to help make Kenya Clean, Green and Litter Less. The Government and the Local Authorities will then play a supplementary role in this process through the principles of Private Public Partnership.
When the people take charge of the waste process management, then, waste will be a source of wealth for our people. And we want to encourage all our Partners to take pro-active approach and show leadership in this process in their various regions.
In our drive, we are working with many Youth and Women Groups across Kenya to achieve this. We are in constant communication with them, and we have faith that our concerted efforts will help achieve the Kenya that we all desire.
We must appreciate the role our Government Officers, Local Authority Officers, Corporate Partners and Friends of KCDN have played in this Transformative Agenda for Kenya. Kenya will be turning 50 years Old next Year and our desire is that we all join hands and do something.
This is why we have kept meeting Kenyans in our Awareness Campaign on Separation of Waste at Source. This is why we have kept hosting the Consultative Forums across Kenya. And this is why the Clean-ups have been successful.
At the stage where we have reached now, we need to create more stronger partnerships that will now help address the challenges that come with such massive mobilization and out reach programmes. And we are addressing this with our Partners.
We are looking forward to the Government, the Local Authorities, the Corporates and the Friends of KCDN redoubling their efforts in making this Programme Work. We have the capacities and the capabilities of making Kenya a Clean, Green and Litter Less Country. We have people well read in the technologies that we need for waste conversion to Fuels, Bio-Gas, Compost Manure, Chicken Feeds, etc. We have many Kenyans scattered all over the World whose input, strategic and technological advice can make a difference.
Reach out to us and give us your story and experience. Then let us know what role you may play in this Great Transformation.
We know we can add to the National Grid from Waste Management, and we know, this process can lead to shortage of waste in Kenya with the resultant benefit of lighting up many of our homes. This is the Kenya we are looking forward to. This is the Kenya that we all desire, a Kenya where our kids will be growing in a clean and healthy environment.
A Kenya where when we retire from public service, we will sit by the fire sides and say thanks to God the Almighty for having enabled us to be key players in Transforming Kenya.
Europe had the Industrial Revolution. Let us have the Waste Revolution in Kenya.

The Final Week; The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign

Dear Friends,
The Month of March has been hectic for us at The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
On 2nd March, we were in Kisumu for an Awareness Campaign on Separation of Waste at Source. On 6th March, we hosted The Consultative Forum with the Kongowea Market Leaders and on the 9th March, we hosted another Consultative Forum in Kisumu with key stakeholders. We have since posted all these in our Website and Blogspot.
On the 13th March, we will be hosting our last Consultative Forum for the Month at Umoja Estate then the action begins.
A Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya will just not happen by itself. It needs some concerted and deliberate efforts to make the process be successful. This is why, with the support of Friends of KCDN, we have been able to reach out to many parts of Kenya sensitizing and mobilizing Kenyans into action.
We are very happy that the Provincial Administration across Kenya, the Local Authorities across Kenya, the Key Ministries, many NGOs, CBOs, FBOs and Corporates have been joining us in this process. A quick visit to our website and blogspot will inform you how well this concept has been received across the Country.
As we approach the 3rd Saturday of the Month, we want to invite all Kenyans across the Country to step forward and do something in realizing a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya. Our Focal Point for this Month will be Kondele Estate on the 17th March, where we will be joined by a strong team from the Provincial Administration, the Kenya Police, the City Council of Kisumu, the Maseno University, the Kisumu Polytechnic, Bamato Environmental and Sanitation Project, Kiwama and many more Friends of KCDN for the Clean-up as from 7.00am.
On the same date, we will have another strong presence at Kongowea Wholesale Market where the Traders, the Councilors, the Municipal Chief Executives, Coast Women in Development, the International Republican Institute and many more Friends of KCDN will be joining us in Cleaning the Market as from 12.00 noon.
In partnership with others, we are determined to make Kongowea the Model Market in East and Central Africa Region. And in Partnership with Maseno University, we want to explore how best to use our various components of waste across the whole Country.
To enable us have this process moving, we want to appeal to all Friends, Institutions, and People of Goodwill for their financial support. We also want to invite your Partnership and Participation with us in this process across the whole Country. Kindly do your part and a Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya at 50 will be realized.

We are certain to make announcements that will ease the question of Waste Management in Kenya.
Time has come when our Universities must be seen in practice as offering solutions to our needs as a Country. And this is where Maseno University will be setting the trends. We also want to invite Kenyans who have lived outside there, seen how systems work, to join us in this Campaign. You have something to offer and your services are needed.

The Kondele Clean-up Forum

We had a strategic meeting with key stakeholders in Kisumu over the upcoming Clean-up Campaign re-launch scheduled for Kondele Market on the 17th March 2012.
First, in the company of Mr. John Sande- the Director Environment Department at the City Council of Kisumu, we made a courtesy call on the Deputy Town Clerk Ms Muthoni Orlale.

We then held The Consultative Forum at the DC's Board Room chaired by Ms Lililan Itubo- Snr District Officer at the DC's Office. The Forum was attended by

2. Mr. John Sande- Director Environment- City Council of Kisumu
3. Dr George Wagah- Dean- School of Planning and Architecture- Maseno University
4. Mr. Charles Olang'o- Maseno University

This was purely a planning session for the Clean-up scheduled for the 17th March. The Clean-up will be hosted at Kondele Market while the Tree Planting sessions will be held at Kondele Police Station, Migosi Health Centre, Kondele Primary School, Migosi Primary School, Manyatta Primary School and at The Provincial General Hospital.
We were impressed that many more groups have been meeting with the Council in some advance planning for the D-Day.

A Consultative Team cordinated by The Council but revolving around the City Council of Kisumu, the Provincial Administration, Maseno University, Kisumu Polytechnic, Bamato Environmental and Sanitation Project, Nema, Kisumu Action Team and the Bus Park will co-opt other willing Partners to form the Standing Committee that will plan for this event every Month.
We later met with the area Councilor Mr. Tom Ogolla who promised to help in the mobilization process.
Our last planning session will be on the 16th March 2012 at 10am at the DC's Board Room and this meeting will be attended by all the Key Partners and Groups.

The Kongowea Market Forum

The last one week has been real hectic for us at KCDN and The Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
On the 2nd March 2012, we met with stakeholders at Kondele Estate in our first planning session for the Kondele Clean-up Campaign. We are in discussions with Maseno University and Kisumu Polytechnic and we are happy that the Municipal Council of Kisumu has convened a Stakeholders Forum involving the Kisumu Residents to help plan for the day.
Today the 6th March 2012, we were in a Leaders Meeting at Kongowea Market which was also attended by Cllr Ali Rashid of Airport and Cllr Peter Oduor from Changamwe. Cllr Karama from Kongowea was indisposed and he sent his apologies through Ms. Betty Sharon of the Coast Women in Development.

The meeting was a planning session for the March 17th Nationwide Clean-up Campaign and was ably chaired by Mr. Ali Mtsumi- the Chairman of the Kongowea Market Central Committee.
Several issues of great concern to the Market Traders were raised and we will be passing the same to the Town Clerk and the Permament Secretary Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government in a Memoranda.

We agreed that on the 17th March 2012, as part of the Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign, the Councilors and the Municipal Leaders will be joining the Kongowea Wholesale Market Traders, Coast Women in Development, KCDN and any other willing partners in Cleaning the Market, and this will be a Monthly Exercise.

We have made a very clear resolve that we want to make Kongowea Wholesale Market a Model Market in East and Central Africa, and we want to thank the Public Service Transformation Department at the OPM, the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Ministry of Local Government, the Ministry of Environment and Mineral Resources, the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development, the Provincial Administration, the Local Authorities and the many Friends of KCDN for being part of this Great Transformative Agenda in our Journey of Hope across Kenya.
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change we seek'- President Barack Obama of the USA.

A Clean, Green and Litter Less Kenya at 50 is possible and achievable.

He is also Chair to the Nyamonye Catholic Church Development Fund.
