Launch of the KCDN Website

Speech by Hon Robinson Njeru Githae, EGH, Minister for Nairobi Metropolitan Development on the occasion of the Launch of the KCDN Website on 20^th April 2011 at Charter Hall.

Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen,

I wish to convey my appreciation and that of the Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development on this auspicious occasion as you launch your organization’s website.

It is gratifying to note that your organization has taken steps in keeping with the provisions of our new constitution particularly in ensuring the right to a clean and healthy environment in their neighbourhoods.

I have been informed that your organization has already undertaken clean-up in Nairobi and Mombasa and eventually rolling out to other urban centres in Kenya. This is very encouraging as it enhances entrenchment of culture of citizen responsibility for cleaning their immediate neighbourhoods and business places.

As a Ministry, we encourage you to continue involving neighbourhood groups in clean-up activities as this helps create awareness on the benefits of a clean environment. I know through these activities, you have greatly helped the residents of Nairobi and other urban centres realize that solid waste is a resource and not necessarily a disposal problem.

It is encouraging that your clean-up activities take place on the 4^th Saturday of every month which is in tandem with my Ministry’s clean-up programme already scheduled in the Metropolitan Region. We are open to collaborate with you as well as other like minded organizations in this endevour.

As I conclude my remarks, let me assure you that the government is very committed to addressing the issues of solid waste management in the Metropolitan Region to mitigate against the effects of rapid increase in population. As Ministry of Nairobi Metropolitan Development, we have held eighteen (18) clean-up exercises within the Metropolitan Region since September 2009.

Environmental stewardship towards sustainable development

A presentation by Odhiambo T Oketch during the Gala Night for Daystar University Environmental Initiative Club on 1^st April 2011.

1^st April 2011

Last year, the Government headed to Mau Forest to start what the Rt Hon Prime Minister said was going to be the beginning of a campaign that was going to see us restoring our forest cover to 10% in 10 years.
This indeed took place and today, 15 Months down the line, what can we place our hands on as tangible evidence that indeed we have planted so many Trees all across Kenya? I was hence very excited when I was invited to come and talk about ‘Environmental stewardship towards sustainable development’. In approaching this topic, there are 6 very cardinal issues that we ought to address in our efforts at environmental stewardship, namely;
1] Environmental education; in our mobilization process, we are encouraging the youth and their parents to each become personally responsible for our environment. We must each plant a tree and attend to it. We must each keep clean our water points and stop throwing garbage into the streams. This clogs the rivers and the water points. This is a serious campaign that needs all of us. Let us join hands and in the process, not only focus on Mau, but our immediate environments, our neighbourhoods.
2] Vanishing wetlands; we all know that rain has not been as consistent as it was some times back. This has led to drying up of wetlands. There has also been that threat from invasion by man. What is our collective responsibility in galvanizing the populace to conserving and preserving our wetlands. It is our responsibility to impart information to the youth and the parents in this regard.
3] Flimsy plastic bags; this is the biggest menace affecting our environment. What then is our role in making sure that we dispose of plastic in a manner that becomes environmentally friendly? We must do all that it takes to make the all needed difference. The government also needs to come up with a clear policy on manufacture of flimsy plastic bags. In the same vein, the government must also enforce rules on disposal of such paper. Can we attach instant fines to all those caught in the act of degrading our environment?

4] Clearing of vegetation on road reserves; it must be our responsibility to plant and water trees along road reserves. In the East of Nairobi we have concrete jungles competing for all space. In an estate like Komarock, the road sides are all tarmac and it becomes very tricky planting trees. But it is our responsibility as Kenyans to ensure that we plant trees along the roads and in our compounds. This is the drive that we are carrying on this year and we call upon all people of goodwill to join us in this exercise. Let us all make it our responsibility. And at KCDN, we are sensitizing both the youth and our parents on this need.
5] Rain water harvesting; Kenya has been procrastinating with this for ever. Just after Independence, we used to have lots of rain. Compared with the trends now, we could predict with certainty when the rains would fall. This calls to mind our planning capacity. It is sad to note that Masinga Dam was built in 1942 and has served Nairobi and the Metropolis with distinction till now. If the government put in some little planning, we would have had various methods of water harvesting and storage. Isn’t it time we put pressure on our government to become serious with planning. We can do it, so let us do it.
6] Conservation of the 5 water towers; for 46 years now, little effort has been put into conserving the water towers by the government. We all know how Mau Forest Complex was given out to politically correct individuals and how that has led to massive rape of the water catchment area. We all know that when Aberdare Ranges was under threat from the government, it was the private sector that came up with a road map to fence the forest and guard against government instigated encroachment. We must all loud Mr. Wilfred Kiboro, formerly the CEO at Nation Media Group for doing a sterling job in this. Kenyans must all join and help guard against government instigated encroachments into the 5 water towers namely; Mau Forest Complex, Aberdare Ranges, Mt Kenya, Cherengani Hills and Mt Elgon.
We all know that when it comes to environmental destruction, the government has been in the front line. We have forest guards employed by the relevant ministries to guard our forest, yet, the worst forest destructions have been supervised by these people who were meant to safe guard the same forests.
All is not lost at least. If we put our act together now, we can help give life to our children. If we enjoin our children in environmental education now, we will create a future that will be green. If we join hands with the relevant ministries and put them to task, become partners in the process, our guards will not destroy our future any more.
This is why we enjoin Kenyans and the people of the world in also appealing to the Right Hon Prime Minister and the President to lead from the front and help mobilize the people of Kenya through initiatives such as Kazi Kwa Vijana in playing a greater role in creating environmental awareness and conservation. The President should be in the frontline in this effort.                                                                                                        The Kazi Kwa Vijana Initiative if well handled can clean the Nairobi River and help make Nairobi green again. And this is where KCDN comes in. And we have invited Friends of KCDN  to be joining us every 4^th Saturday of the Month in cleaning our immediate neighbourhoods all across Kenya under the auspices of the Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.

God Firmly in Charge; Successful event

Friends,
We have arrived in Eldoret safely, only that the Minister for Roads MUST surcharge the road contractor who did the road section just before Timboroa up to Burnt Forest.
I thought the Road contractors had measurable standards for constructing roads. The patch just before Timboroa until you reach Burnt Forest is a clear study of how public funds are wasted in projects that basically show us that someone is sleeping on the job.
Back to our main even of today; Tree Planting at Ngong Hills.

Friends, we were at a loss Friday evening on how we were going to transport the many volunteers that had expressed interest in joining us at Ngong Hills to help plant trees. Amazingly, we had 5 buses and it proved to us once more that God is Firmly in Control.

3rd Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign

Friends,
Today we scored a double victory;

1. Harambee Stars beat Angola 2;1
2. Many Kenyans turned out across the country to join in the 3rd Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.

Now, Harambee Stars made us proud after a series of loses that made many of us not go to the stadium. I was in particularly a very happy man except when Mariga decided to undress in public after giving us a deserved lead. I thought he knows the rules; No undressing in public. But we must forgive him and move on. I would have done the same.

Kenyans also made me proud today. Many across the country turned out and helped make Kenya clean. I was at Eastleigh at St Theresa Girls Secondary School and my, what a turn out.
The Nairobi Clean-up was organized by the One Stop Youth Information Centre, a department of the Social Development Department of the City Council of Nairobi in partnership with the Department of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi.
The response was massive; close to 1,200 Youths from all the Eight Constituencies of Nairobi took part. They were joined by a contigent from Kenyatta University Environment Club members under the auspices of NAVNET. The result was massive; we split into eight teams and we cleaned Eastleigh.
We are also happy with the reports we are receiving from all Kenya; Mombasa, Kagio in Nyeri, Nzoia, Migori, Makueni, Isiolo. You all deed well and we at the National Secretariat are encouraged. Our efforts are not going to waste.

Tools being given out to the more than 1,200 volunteers who took part during the 3rd Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign in Eastleigh Nairobi.

We will all be joining hands next Saturday at Ngong Hills with Imani Children Homes to plant 20,000 trees on the Hills. Please join us at 6.30am at Uhuru Park on 2nd April 2011 to enable us move as a team to Ngong. Express Connections Ltd otherwise known us Double M will be providing us with transport to Ngong.
We are still appealing at all and sundry for support.

Following the death of my Brother- Fredrick Amos Oduor Oketch on the 2nd of March 2011 at Jamaa Hospital in Nairobi, it was clear it was going to be a tough order on the family of Joash Eliakim Oketch.
But thanks to all my Friends, you made it easy for me and within 10 days, we buried my Bro on 12th March 2011 at Hula Kodero, Othach, East Yimbo, Usigu Division, Bondo District in Siaya County.
I must start by thanking George Woods Funeral Services for responding to my call on 2nd March when they went to Jamaa and picked the remains of my Bro to Chiromo Mortuary.

26th Feb in Huruma along Juja Road

On 26th February 2011, many volunteers converged along Juja Road in Huruma and joined in the Monthly Nationwide Clean-up Campaign.
We were impressed by the presence of the Traffic Police, the Administration Police and the area DO who all joined us in cleaning the area.
