The CDE launches the Training Programme on Waste Management

Friends,
The County Director of Environment Nairobi Mr. Titus Simiyu launched the Training Programme on Waste Management in Nairobi yesterday in a function that was attended by the Provincial Administration, the select Trainees, Inuka Kenya, EcoPost and The Clean Kenya Campaign- TCKC. He said that this was a timely intervention and that his office will continue to support such initiatives aimed at making our City Clean.
He made it clear that waste management in Nairobi is the responsibility of the City Council of Nairobi, and apparently, the City Council of Nairobi has been overwhelmed. He noted that waste is a resource that can be used to make many items. He praised the Management Team at EcoPost for proving to the Youth that there are great employment opportunities in the Waste Industries.
The Team was conducted through a tour of the Waste Management Process at EcoPost where Mr. Charles Kalama ably explained to the Director and the entourage the whole process, from delivery, sorting, drying, processing to actual production. We were happy to witness the birth of one more Plastic Pole as we toured the Factory.
Mr. Charles Kalama conducting the County Director of Environment and the DO Kariobangi on a Tour of EcoPost. The Team joined in the Tour as well
The Director noted that there was enough waste for all who want to process waste, and that they should be encouraged to learn the conversion processes and in the end, the Trainees will be foot soldiers in our joint efforts at working for a Clean Kenya.
He Decreed the process of shifting waste from all over Nairobi to Dandara, saying that dumping has never been an applicable science. He appreciated the collective efforts of The Clean Kenya Campaign and our Partners in encouraging the process of Separation of Waste at Source saying that this is what will make Kenya Clean- not dumping.
He said NEMA is working with other Partners to upgrade Waste Management in Easleigh and the aim is to make Eastleigh a Modern Clean Business Hub in Nairobi and called for active support from all the residents of Nairobi in making Nairobi Clean.
Mr. Simiyu said NEMA will support the Training Programme on Waste Management and he will be sending his officers to lecture the Trainees on the NEMA Regulations and all the necessary Policy Issues on Waste Management.
We had made an invitation to the Director of Environment at the City Council of Nairobi and as usual, there was no response.
The area DC Mr. Evans Mutari was represented by the area DO Mr. Charles Mabonga who appreciated the efforts of NEMA, The Clean Kenya Campaign, EcoPost, and Inuka Kenya in coming up with this Training Programme that he said was very timely. He recounted his frustrations with the Council and how they dispose of waste in Kariobangi, saying that they have made endless requests for enforcement of the By-Laws on Dumping along Outering Road and this keeps falling on deaf years at the Council.
DO Kariobangi Mr. Charles Mabonga addressing the Trainees
Mr. Peter Irungu from Inuka Kenya appreciated the launch of the Training Programme on Waste Management and pledged the full support from Inuka Kenya. He said that Inuka Kenya has formed the County Board of Garbage Collectors in Nairobi and they will mobilize all their Networks to work for a Clean Kenya as we address issues of Peace Building and Governance as well.
He said that Inuka Kenya, through the USAID funded Programme of Yes Youth Can are keen on Business Development for the Youth as they create more Entrepreneurs. This Initiative has brought together 150 Garbage Collection Groups in Nairobi. Mr. Irungu noted that EcoPost is an Initiative of Young Entrepreneurs and it has set very good example for the many young people who are unemployed in Kenya.
Mr. Peter irungu from Inuka Kenya addresses the Trainees
He said that we must all unite and work towards making Nairobi the Green City in the Sun that it once was, and not the current City in the Garbage that it is.
Ms Lorna Rutto welcomed the Trainees and the Guests to their premises saying she was humbled that The Clean Kenya Campaign had chosen their premise as the launching pad for The Training Programme on Waste Management. She gave their humble story of how they began the Company with no resources, but they had ideas, faith, determination and commitment. She told the Trainees that nothing comes easy. You must remain focused and have the kind of commitment that will see you through. of course, you must have the relevant technical skills.
This is why, EcoPost has joined hands with The Clean Kenya Campaign to launch The Training Programme on Waste Management that will benefit many young people in Nairobi and across Kenya and in the process, reduce many waste lines from the waste stream. She said this will be their contribution towards making Kenya Clean and in the process, placing bread on the table for many household and we create employment opportunities for many.
Ms Lorna Rutto motivating the Trainees
We at The Clean Kenya Campaign want to sincerely appreciate all those who worked with us in the run up to this launch. First, we want to sincerely thank Ms Lorna Rutto and Mr. Charles Kalama who took much of their time to sit with us, [Mr. Otieno Sungu and myself], to plan for this process. It was not easy developing the Training Modules and the Time Lines. But were were able to do this in good time.
Secondly, I want to sincerely thank the County Director of Environment- NEMA Nairobi Mr. Titus Simiyu who accepted our invitation and saw this as a transformative way of making Nairobi regain her lost glory. I want to thank the District Commissioner Kasarani Mr. Evans Mutari who accepted our invitation and readily sent his DO Kariobangi Mr. Charles Mabonga to represent him.
I want to sincerely thank Inuka Kenya team for responding to our invitation by sponsoring 8 Youths to this Training. Ms Grace Makunzi has simply been awesome. And I want to thank all the other 16 Participants who have reached out to us for this Training. It will surely change your lives as it also changes our lives and neighbourhoods.
This is a Transformative Agenda for Kenya, and we are appreciative of the continued support from the Public Service Transformation Department at the Office of the President. They will be walking with us through this Journey of Hope across Kenya as our Key Partners. I want to appreciate A Better World/SOF-DI and Akiba Uhaki Foundation for having faith in what we are doing at The Clean Kenya Campaign. You have been the pillar upon which we drive our strength.
We are crafting a more powerful Partnership and as soon as the details are in place, we will make the announcements. Waste can NEVER waste us away, and the vested interests in the Waste Industry are firmly on notice. Your days are numbered. We cannot live in abject filth just because a few Officers are incompetent and unable to do their work.
The time to make Kenya Clean is now and all are being invited to play their roles.
As usual, we have posted all the photos on our Facebook Pages.

The Kibera Medical and Peace Camp

Friends,
Under the umbrella body of the Kenya University Students Organization, Mkenya Daima, PeaceNet, Avenue Health Care, CHF International and other Partners, a Medical Camp cum Peace Rally was hosted at Kibera today.
Mr. Okanga of CHF International briefing Sungu and Oto about the Peace Campaign and Medical Camp in Kibera today
The Clean Kenya Campaign Team was invited by CHF International and we were elated to be part of this Campaign. It also gave us an opportunity to check ourselves out, know our Blood Pressure, Body Temperature and all those other medical issues and seek medical support.
Residents who had been screened waiting for medication
The  event was supported by Coca Cola, Mabati Rolling Mills, Bidco oil Company and CHF International among others and was organized by a team that included Migosi Otieno Ombok, Gabriel Achayo and a team from the Universities.
This even was appealing for us at The Clean Kenya Campaign because it advances the 2nd Theme of our Campaign; Peace Building. The good thing is, the peace Building Mission was hinged on Life Saving Mission- the Medical Camp, which had the Avenue Health Care Team taking charge.
I am informed that medication was donated by a host of Pharmaceutical Companies.
This Campaign is the Clean Kenya we all want, and we are happy that The Clean Kenya Campaign will be working with Mkenya Daima, PeaceNet, Kituo Cha Sheria, Kenya University Students Organization, and many more groups as we approach the hosting of the next General Elections and as we celebrate our 50 Years of Independence.
We all believe that a Clean and Peaceful Kenya is possible, and there in no way Elections will be used to create discord amongst us. We are all One Family under God. And we have posted all the other Photos on our Facebook Pages.
Now, look at this Petition and if you are agreeable to its content, sign and help disseminate the same far and wide;http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/removing-the-director-of-environment-at-ccn-from-office.html

TOA SAUTI CAMPAIGN-PROTECT LIVES, SUPPORT OUR TRAFFIC POLICEMEN

Today, we The Clean Kenya Campaign wishes to commend the traffic department under Traffic Commandant Mr. Benson Kibue. Through the Toa Sauti campaign supported by Safaricom, they will reduce deaths on our roads.
While driving in Kawangware towards our offices after an activity in Pumwani Majengo, we came face to face with impunity on the roads. A Matatu driver, picking passengers right in the middle of the road rudely refused to give way to other motorists, ourselves included. When we sought to ask him to pick passengers from the designated stage, re rudely told us that he was not stopping us from going to wherever we wished and we should mind our own business.
We took photographic evidence of this, contacted the Traffic Commandant who immediately instructed the Deputy Commandant Nairobi Mr. Katana to track down that matatu and have it arrested. Within 30 minutes, action had been taken and the driver arrested, we have been called to Nairobi Area traffic police and the matter is with them.
We must all play our roles in creating order in our society. We must make an effort to clean our systems, attitudes, and mindsets. Our physical, social and political environments need cleaning.
There is a lot of disorder on the roads and we must join the traffic police to police our roads. We must speak out and refuse to be intimidated by rowdy, disrespectful and discourteous motorists. We must also abide by the laws and ensure we do not contribute to this disorder.
As pedestrians and motorists, we must obey traffic rules and regulations. We must obey the traffic lights and stop and move when permitted to.
This is the only way we can create an orderly society and The Clean Kenya Campaign joins the Traffic Department and Safaricom to advance TOA SAUTI CAMPAIGN. Our collective voices must be heard in rejecting impunity, carelessness, dangerous attitudes and lack of courtesy from our roads.
Otieno Sungu.
The Clean Kenya Campaign.

Sofia Clean up Campaign

Dear Friends,
We hosted the last of our Clean-up Campaigns for this year at Sofia in Majengo today. There was some confusion when some vested interest decided to course confusion yesterday and informed the residents of Sofia that our Clean-up will be at Gikomba Area. They even took the working tools we were supposed to use.
At the outset, we want to thank the Level 1 Communications for documenting The Sofia Clean up Campaign. This is the beginning of Level 1 Communication documenting all our events with a view to helping create a mass Campaign.
This is Nairobi today
This prompted some residents to go to Gikomba and to their chagrin nothing was taking place there.
However, the Clean-up went on smoothly and the area residents organized themselves very quickly and with the little equipment we had, we did some good job. All the photos have been posted to our Facebook Pages.
Residents of Sofia came out in good numbers
Sofia is changing and we are happy. The residents are fired up and they want the relevant Government Departments and the City Council of Nairobi to play their part as we all join hands in making Kenya Clean.
It was a little bit depressing to encounter human waste in the waste stream and this is something the residents said they will guard against from now on.
This old lady was a real inspiration
This also means, the Government must now step in and help with Service Provision. We can turn Kenya around if we all put our mind into it.
Clean Drainage after our works
Raw Human Waste in the trench
At the same time, the Business Students at Masinde Muliro University and the Social Workers joined with the Municipal Council of Kakamega for a major Clean-up in Kakamega sponsored by the Cooperative Bank. This is a positive sign and all we are inviting Kenyans to is; Let us join hands and make Kenya Clean.
Later in the day, we encountered impunity on our Roads first hand when a Nissan Matatu KBA 484H plying Route 46 blocked the road in Kawangware and when Sungu asked him to align himself well on the road, he asked Sungu to mind his own business. We then minded our business as responsible citizens.
We took the photo of the offending vehicle and reported the matter to the Traffic Commandant Mr. Ben Kibue and we were impressed by their prompt action. The offending driver was arrested and the Deputy Traffic Commandant Nairobi Mr. Katana invited us to Nairobi Area Traffic Headquarters to verify.
We must applaud the Traffic Commandant and his team for their prompt action. Kenyans must join hands to bring back sanity on our Roads.
A more cleaner Drainage in Sofia

Waste Management; The Training Programme

Friends,
As you all know, we are following the trash by initiating a Training Programme on Waste Management on the 19th November 2012 at EcoPost in Baba Dogo in a process that will be officiated by the County Director of Environment Mr. Titus Simiyu.
Mathew, Oto, Hesborn and Sungu
It has been a very busy week for us. It all started with us meeting the Religious Leaders in Kawangware on Wednesday where we met with Rev Livingston Irungu and Rev Gerphas Oure to advance the launch of Religious Leaders for a Clean Kenya. I was with Migosi Otieno Sungu and Rev Sam Oketch for the meeting.
Sungu, Erick, Porter and Oto
Then, we have been meeting with several Teams who are keen on the Training on Waste Management and every thing is in place.
Oto, Brian, Beryl and Sungu
We are happy with the support Inuka Kenya has given to several groups across all Nairobi. We are inviting as many Waste Collectors, Handlers and Convertors to take advantage of this Training Programme. Registration for January is open and ongoing.
Besides equipping them with Practical Skills on Waste Separation and Conversion, all the Trainees will also be instructed on the NEMA Regulations and Policies on Waste Management and the City By-Laws on the same.

TRANSFORMING NAIROBI-SERVICE DELIVERY KEY TO CLEANER CITIES

The Clean Kenya Campaign is bringing to the fore the ideals that define a cleaner, safer and decent society to live in.
The parameters that define cleaner, safer and decent cities are not only the physical cleanliness. Cleaner cities are a function of timeliness and satisfactory service delivery. The reason most of our towns and cities cannot be defined as clean is because besides the garbage, rot and filth we have challenges of order, service delivery and poor enforcement of regulations.
It is our belief that our cities can also get these basics right, that our public servants tasked with ensuring cleaner, safer and decent environments are men and women who get their priorities right, plan, implement, monitor, track and evaluate the plans they have.
It is for this reason that The Clean Kenya Campaign-TCKC, having evaluated the priorities of The City Council of Nairobi, especially the Directorate of Environment; are convinced this Department is not keen on sorting the problem of waste in our capital city.
Sample this; the council has 8 working trucks. Nairobi has 8 divisions. That is one truck per division. This is not adequate. The council contracts 20 trucks to supplement its efforts at a cost of Ksh. 40 million per Month. The cost of buying one truck is roughly Ksh. 10 million. Would it not be prudent to spend tax payers’ money investing in purchasing 4 trucks every month to build the capacity of the council to collect garbage? At that rate, the council could buy 48 trucks in one year, which means 6 more trucks for every division. In the second and subsequent years, the council would only be spending money on fuel and servicing the 48 trucks.
TCKC is convinced that CCN is not keen on sorting waste issues in this town. This is why we are inviting Kenyans who believe that we can live better lives to join us on tracking the councils and how they spend our hard earned revenue. It is time to ensure we demand for cleaner environments as envisaged in Chapter 4 Article 42 of the constitution; Every person has a right to a clean  and healthy environment.
Together with our Partners, we want to ensure that waste is managed and that we sort it out as should be done, and these things are not rocket science.
Kindly sign this petition if you believe we can change Nairobi by taking to task those in public office and not performing;
